I can't say with 100% certainty, but don't get stingy with the mobo. in all honesty, i think my PC still does what i need it to cause i bought a above average -> a-bit-under-topofthepops mobo. It is what channels all your data.
What I'd really like to see is Autodesk run some test with Civil 3D and the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and let people know if it's worth the $1000.00 bucks to upgrade and if their programs take advantage of the new chips.
Our workstations at work vary between 16GB and 32GB... My home machine has 64GB. We had a drawing file that had a corrupted surface or something inside it... Our machines at work would fatal error anytime this file was opened. You could never get to the command line without it crashing. I tried everything to open the file at work. Took the file home and it opened just fine on my box with 64GB...
It is probably not worth it. AutoCAD is not (very) multi-threaded. You are better off with the fastest (Mhz wise) Intel processor you can get or overclock. A 4.5ghz i7 7700k or i5 7600k would probably make short work of the paltry 4.0ghz you can get out of a Threadripper (if you are lucky).
The exporttoautocad2000 command took 3 minutes.
Because when I started this thread, I was using the 2020 version, I tried again the normal export command with the 2021 version.
After 6 minutes, I pressed the cancel button, the process did not cancel, after waiting two additional minutes I killed Civil 3D from the Task Manager.
the export takes a few minutes compared to a few hours with the 3D civil export command
The disadvantage is that it turns external references into blocks, but they can be turned back externally with the blocktoxref command
