How to claim issues on Jira.

If you self-register to Jira, your initial user rights are restricted to watching and commenting issues.

If you want to work on an issue (and claim it on Jira), you have to contact us and tell us on which project you would like to work. We will then add you, to the specific group and you get permissions to move issues on the board.

In the beginning you will only have permission to move issues from "ready for development" to "ready for code review", only senior members receive permission to conduct code reviews & to merge code into the main repository.

Senior members are determined by the team itself, e.g., they have advanced skills & knowledge about the project.

Recently I faced the issue of someone else working on the same issue as me as a result of which we had PRs on the same issue.

Hi,

No this is not exactly right. You should only take issues which are "ready for development", not issues which are in any other state of the workflow. Move them to "in development" and then to "ready for code review" when you are done, and create a pull request.

Only issues in "ready for development" are selected to be implemented and defined well enough so you can work on ist. If you don't follow these procedure you are probably implementing something we don't need or not the way we want it to be implemented and therefore you code will probably not merged.

Also please only take one issue after another. Once your PR is reviewed you will probably have to make some changes before it can be merged. If you have too many open issues you will have a hard time to keep track of everything.

What about issues marked as backlog/UX Backlog - i plan to work on the UX for Catroid and most UX issues are marked with this tag.

Hi,

Please don't work on them right now, if you want your code merged. If the issue is in UX Backlog the usability team still needs to work on it, meaning they will define how the issue should be solved. So if you implement it without their input, your code will most likely not be integrated into our codebase. If this is not important to you, you can work on them and link your repo in your proposal. Matthias clarified this here

The same is true for issues in backlog, because they are still being reviewed, if they are to be implemented or how and if the need input from our usability team.

Only issues in "ready for development" are ready to be implemented. Everything else might not be merged into our repo or may require major modifications of your code.

If you have 1-2 UX issues you would really like to work on, I can ask the usability team to try to speed up the process of usability input a little bit, but with no guarantees. They are all volunteers and their time is limited and/or other issues might be more important/urgent right now.
