Hello, mentors!

My name is Edy Figueroa and I'm from Mexico. I have been a Pocket Code user since 2020 and have seen firsthand how the app and the community have evolved. Now that I am a Systems Engineer student with Android Studio background, I would love to give back to the community :)

As soon as I saw the Pin projects to the Android launcher (“Play as app” shortcuts) project I knew I had to apply. I remember when you had to remove the "Export as APK" feature back in 2022 due to Play Store policies. Bringing that native app feeling to user projects would be awesome to me!!

Currently I already set up my working enviroment and have succesfully built Catroid on my device. I'm now analyzing AndroidManifest and Intents to plan the Trampoline Activity, while also getting ready to start the Entry Task for this project.

However, I noticed in your README.md you had a training ticket in Jira. Would love to do it as preparation as well! Could you please grant me access to the Catrobat Jira to create the new ticket? My username and email is Edy FL (dnl...@gmail.com).

Would love to contribute to this project!
Best regards,
Edy.

Dear Edy,

This idea with the launcher icon is very dear to me too, and I want to strongly encourage you to submit a proposal. Also, thank you very much for your willingness to give back and contribute after so many years.

The Catrobat project has slowly been reinvigorated over the last year, though we are still recuperating after the shock that was the advent of LLMs capable of coding and teaching to code, but we are finally coming very soon to the next release of Pocket Code and still believe that accessible coding on one's phone in one's own language, with a focus on games, has a lot of merit even today.

The way we do things with GSoC this year is a bit different from previous years, so please ignore the README.md and instead only follow the instructions on the idea page, with the entry task specified there and also the instructions on our submission template.

Many thanks, and awesome to hear from you!

Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang!

This email really means a lot to me! I am very grateful for your response and words :')

And trust me, I know some people who will be very pleased when they hear a new release is around the corner! I can imagine how sudden the shift was to the LLM world, though, and how much it could affect an open source project's development. But I'm glad to hear that the team is now getting the hang of it!

Also, thank you so much for clarifying the Jira situation for me. I'm now going to focus all my efforts on the entry task then.

See you in the applications!
Edy.
