IT Educators, have you tried it? Does it work? Should we take up this
issue with Head Office?

What are the costs for the latest Delphi? And the Licensing fees?

Lets have some feedback.

I am having problems in the student accounts. Lazarus cannot save in
folders that have spaces (ie My Documents). Reason for this is because
Windows refers to spaces as a percentage value; something like
My20%Documents20%, and Lazarus does not like this. Lazarus is
developed for most operating systems the likes of Windows, Linux, Mac,
BSD and thus tries to cater for all the differences in the various
OS's. The spaces in folders is not an issue if you run in a normal
account, just don't make a space or just rename folder to
My_Documents. Problem in server environment is students files get save
as default into My Documents (which you cannot just simple rename). I
will look for a solution and post it when I find one.

On the positive side, Lazarus seems to do everything Delphi does,
although I'm having problems linking an ACCESS database because
Lazarus is designed for more structured databases like SQL and Oracle
(more support for these databases). Being open source software,
Lazarus tries to cater for open products such as open source databases
instead of proprietary databases such as Access.

What I have noticed is Lazarus is much faster and more responsive than
Delphi and seems to error less. All the code is the same, slight
differences in GUI layout and menu structures. Have not encountered
any issues running Lazarus in Linux, only issue I found in Windows is
the folder thing. Lazarus can also convert Delphi files to Lazarus
files but it is not the easiest process.

The major pro is that it is free and we can hand it out to the
students to work from home.

I used Lazarus to set the second question (OOP) of the prelim paper,
no issues - used on home PC so did not have any problems saving, etc.

I had a look at the SQL/Access, did not spend too much time figuring
it out. Maybe it would work if we use OpenOffice?
