I don't know, but I don't think that was the main issue. Sure, the forum was running at a loss, but the amount of work keeping spam out, moderating the forum and updating the forum software were the big issues.
I could probably park the forum on a friend's rack server in a data center, but I just don't have the time to moderate the post, and I would really have to look into the forum software before I'm able to update it.
You could always try Google+. They have some good community pages that make it easy to set up and discuss whatever interests you.
That isn't Facebook, and they have a lot of groups who swear by it.
Another option would be Discourse. That is more of a straight forum software, but it is much nicer to use. That one has more of a setup cost, however.
Neither of these will solve the engagement issue, but they might help a bit.
Full disclosure, I work for Google, but I am not getting paid to endorse it or anything. I just think it is better for community discussions than anything else.

I am very sad to see it go! The site provided many with so much information and help! I got a lot from the board! I am grateful to still have the Google group!
I understand the time issue being even more demanding than the financial issue. I maintain a website without a forum added to it; and it is very time consuming to keep updated.

Would you know of the number of active forum members for the forums?
