Each year millions of
American cows, pigs, chickens, goats, and sheep will
travel from farms to livestock auctions where they
will be bought and sold for slaughter. While the
animals ultimately must be killed for meat, they often
encounter unnecessary cruelty, violence and neglect
at the auction houses. An animal rights group
recently captured undercover footage at one of these
houses that revealed workers “throwing, beating,
stomping and kicking animals in the face and body.”
Sadly, this case is not an
isolated event; animal cruelty is commonplace at
livestock auctions across the U.S. More disturbing
still, USDA, the government agency responsible for
regulating the treatment of animals, has failed to
create programs aimed at cracking down on known abuses
in the country’s auction houses. Sign
the petition requesting that the USDA take
measures to eradicate this savage treatment of animals
and impose the proper consequences for auction houses
guilty of cruelty that occurs under their watch.
