75! You CAN'T MISS IT! Look for the PINK FURR signs!!! Please
ALL come if you can and bring stuff to sell, help us out, or BUY STUFF!
Every dollar helps the FURR kitties and boy,,,,,,do we have a lot of 'em!
Thanks so you all for passing the word and encouraging folks to come! Give
praises to Muffie for working SO hard on this yard sale and also wish her the
best since her Dad has been ill and she has been busy taking care of him in a
Monroe nursing home......
FURR OFFICE!
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH Kimberly for
helping in the FURR office
today! Several hours of work in there is a HUGE help! REALLY
appreciate you calling and coming to pitch in....FURR is way behind on filing,
making folders for all the kitties, organizing, etc., in the office and with all
of these cats, the stacks of paper keep piling up! Thanks so very very
much!
ANOTHER HELM'S ROAD FERAL?
Krista said another feral blackish cat was over at the house
where we trapped all the "Helms Rd" cats! She borrowed one of my traps and
went over there to try to get it. After 2 days, she got it and brought it
to me. The only thing we can do (FURR) is a TNR. We cannot take in
any more kitties.....:(
Anyway, I managed to get the cat out of the trap (black
tortie) and immediately noticed that she looked pregnant! But after
turning her over and examining her belly and palpating her, I could easily see
that she was a nursing mom! We had to let her go, but only after I put
some flea treatment on her. I was in tears letting this beautiful tortie
loose again.....but could not stand the thought of those kittens dying without
her. Hopefully we will see her again and the kittens will come out.
Food & water will be provided for her.
When Krista and I went to a few houses in the area, we were
stunned to find a small house down in the back of the pasture where a very
"unfriendly" lady lived and there were feral cats EVERYWHERE! We saw at
least 3 adults and feel like this is where the mama kitty has her babies.
We are trying to think of a plan..........what to do next. The lady was
not interested in talking to us about any of the cats. This is probably
where most of the cats and kittens are coming from. It's horrible.
Wish us luck in solving yet ANOTHER colony issue!
No-Da Mama kitty ("JULIE"):
"Julie" is the mama kitty that goes
with 4 babies that a girl captured in No-Da (sp?). The girl gave the feral
family to her folks to take care of after she caught all of them because she
travels! Mom & Dad have NO idea what to do with these feral kitties
and were at a loss as to how to take care of them. The couple contacted
their friend, Mari Christensen, who in turn contacted me to help. I went
over and found all 5 cats huddled in a small cage sitting in urine! Those
poor folks did not know how to care for them & these cats were NOT
friendly!
I managed to get them all out, bathe
EVERY one of them, de-worm them, put flea stuff on them, clean the cage &
put them all back! Then I went home to get a MUCH bigger cage and some
pelleted litter. I agreed to take the cats into FURR since it was
understood that FURR did not have to pay any of the bills or foster the
cats. This way, I could help work with them, tame them, get a vet to take
care of them and then we could adopt them out. I have spent many many
trips over to their house and did get all tested and mama (Julie)
fixed.
Problem was......they were all
sick! Upper respiratory, etc., but tested negative. Mama was a BEAST
to medicate and although she had a shot, she needed another oral antibiotic
after surgery due to an ear infection that is causing the right side of her face
to droop!
SO, with that said, I am TEMPORARILY
keeping her until medicine is all gone and then she will return to the couple's
house. I have managed to tame her up pretty well! Julie now waltzes
right out of her cage, meanders around the garage, lets me pick her up,,,,,,,,no
problem & occasionally purrs! She will still hiss and pop
me.....but only once in a while!
Julie is a BEAUTIFUL long haired gray
& white kitty! (pictures to come.......she has NOT looked to great,
but gaining weight quickly!)
Reserve kitty RESCUED!
A nice lady called me from the Reserve
in Waxhaw and told me that an orange kitty had been hanging around their
backyard and pool area. He was skinny and extremely skiddish. Most
of the family is HIGHLY allergic to cats, but this lady is SO passionate about
animals, she could not stand this guy being outside without a home! She
fed him and started calling me a few weeks ago about taking him in!
I told her I was very happy that she
cared about this kitty and would be happy to trap it for her if:
one, she found a foster home for him and two, she would pay all of his
bills. She had no problem with that and began searching and searching for
a foster home!
She called me all excited and told me
she had found a foster home for him! I was tickled and went over to get
him. He was in the trap in less than 10 minutes! He was extremely
feral and was about to kill himself trying to get out of the trap before I could
get there to cover it up!
Then, low and behold, I found out who
was fostering him!!! Teresa, from CPAWS...........who is going to be
hopefully helping us out at FURR!!! So, there you go, that's how we get
another FURR kitty!
In only two days I had this cat eating
out of my hand! I could pick him up and he would hug my neck, wrap his
hind legs around me in a really secure bear hug and PURR REALLY loud in my
ear! This is one of those GREAT yellow male kitties that you just cannot
beat! He will be a WONDERFUL kitty in a very short time!!! I named
him "Reserve" so I can remember where he came from!
Teresa fostering kittens:
Teresa, from CPAWS, took a litter of my semi-feral kittens to
foster so that I could hold on to "Reserve" a little longer and work with
him. I am working with him several times a day and he went to the vet
today to get his neuter, test & shots! We are SO grateful to have
Teresa helping us! WOW she's great because she will take semi-feral ones
to finish out!!!
Huanita's feral:
Last night late I drove over to
Huanita's house to visit the feral mama kitty....ANOTHER ONE from the Monroe
colony. This is the spitting image (and sister) to the feral i have in my
garage. Mine, "Deseree" Deseree is EXTREMELY feral and combative. I
have been working with this cat for MONTHS and spending hours of my time trying
to to convince her otherwise, but only making very slow progress. She is a
tough cookie to crumble!
Anyway, the feral Huanita had needed
eye ointment and a look-over, so I went over to do that and low and
behold! She has had a litter of kittens!!! She was HUGE with milk
and the nipples were so swollen with milk you could see her veins about to pop
out! This kitty has a litter out there that needs her......I hope they are
still alive? If they are older kittens and food is still being put out
there (I don't know?), then maybe there is a chance they are still
alive
I went over there today to look for
them and did not see anything, but usually during the day they hide and try to
stay cool. I pray that they are ok and that mama does not end up with
mastitis. I treated her eyes, cleaned her ears and examined her and before
I left, she was lifting up her tail when I scratched her back and rolling
over! This one will be easy to tame and adopt out! She's a
sweetheart......Huanita........wanna trade???
2nd Harvest donation:
Yesterday I drove downtown and received a generous donation
from 2nd Harvest Food Bank! It was a PALLET of kitty treats! I have
plenty to last FURR a while, so I am going to leave some boxes at the lodge for
the volunteers. I will put your name on a case if you just reply to this
email and tell me you want a case. The treats are "Craves" and most cats
love them!
PLEASE respond and let me know if you want a case of
treats! If anyone at PetSmart wants a case, just email me back and I will
deilver and leave it there for you!
We are blessed to be a part of the 2nd Harvest Food Bank
donation rotation!
We got some soft blankets, but only a really small
amount...........
YARD SALE DONATIONS:
Yesterday I picked up yard sale donations
from Mike's cousin, Marcy, from Huntersville and my car if filled to the TOP
with really great stuff!!! Also picked up some good items from Huanita's
neighbor, Jill, after I left her house. I will be glad to unload all of
this stuff since I cannot even see out my car windows!
Please try to get items donated!
THERE IS STILL TIME!
ALSO, remind everybody you know to
PLEASE COME! Remember, every $5 can help a cat somehow! That pays
for ONE Capstar pill which we use on EVERY cat we rescue!!!
Adoption
Reports:
The report from Pearl & Opal's
home is that they are doing GREAT! Opal had a little bit of diarrehia but
she is getting better now after visiting the doctor! i am told that Pearl
leads the way and Opal follows! Apparently, they remain inseperable and
isn't that great!!
The report on Ava and Annalee is
nothing but excellent The family LOVE these two kitties and they are
constantly sending me pictures....which I love! This was a wonderful match
for these two girls!!!
Theodore was adopted by Darren
Martin!!! Mary Whiteside was fostering Theodore and she delivered to
Darren and his wife who already had TWO FURR kitties.......Abbey and
Samoa!!! This is a terrific home and the cats are their kids!!! Theo
also has a bit of runny stool, but again, probably due to the stress of
moving. I had Darren take Theo to the vet and the fecal was very
clean.....do with a little medicine, he should be fine. While I was
talking to Darren on the phone, he said Theo was right in the middle of the
conversation!!!
Taco Bell is doing really GREAT and
his owner called me last week and wants to bring him to me to be
microchipped! I hope and pray that ALL pet owners will get their pets
microchipped~ This kitty has totally settled into his new home and
the last picture I got from his new family was Taco Bell sleeping in a small cat
bed cuddled up with their other cat! Woo hoo! How great!~
Jury is still out on Beamer and
Farrari. The family really wanted one little kitten, but I spent a lot of
time talking to them about why two kittens, at that age, is totally
necessary. The last time I talked with them, they said they could see my
point watching the kittens wrestle, play and run around together! They are
now in LOVE with Fararri, so will call them in a week or so to get their
decision on two......or none! Keep your paws crossed!
Greg is cat sitting for Hogie and Pita this week! The
family lives right across the street from our PetSmart store! Greg said
that lady calls him about those cats and they just LOVE 'em to death!!!
Sounds like a wonderful home for these kitties and all is going extremely
well!!! Yipee!
PetSmart
Kitties
Greg continues to amaze me with
holding down the fort at PetSmart! The kitties are doing really
well. We have several of the colony of 15 kittens there and today Kimberly
added Miracle to the mix. Miracle is quite mischievious and she kept
tearing down the video camera in the kitten room at Kimperly's! If you
have been on the "kitty cam" lately and it is down, now you know why!
Hopefully, now that Miracle has moved to PetSmart, she can harrass all the other
kittens there and keep Greg hopping! Greg....what those cage doors!
I can just see her scaling those in no time flat!
Also at PetSmart is Ming Ming.
Ming Ming is one of my foster kittens I have kept in my study. I loaded up
Ming Ming AND Venus (two FURR fosters) and just broke down in tears! I
could only part with one at a time, so I took Ming Ming and will take Venus when
Ming Ming gets adopted.......I just LOVE these two kittens beyond words!
They are both little diva's, but I just love that personality! Actually,
we have someone that sounds GREAT coming to look at Ming tomorrow! Keep
your paws crossed for this beauty!!!
Sammy:
Sammy & Simon are being fostered
at Angela's house. THANK you soooo much, Angela, for foster two of our
adult cats! These are the ones I feel so sorry for at the lodge when they
wait and wait for homes while the kittens go so quickly. It is great that
you can provide them a home since they were returned and had lived in a home
previously. Sammy is having some gum & teeth issues (per vet's
examination), so he will go to the vet next Tuesday for a dental. I need
to check Simon's teeth also. These are young boys to be needing a dental,
but genetics can play a large part in what these kitties can develop.
PLEASE remember that each dental costs FURR $150 PLUS $10 per
extractions......we need $$$!
AURORA:
Last, but certainly not least, I had
to say goodbye to a dear friend of mine that I have grown to love very
much. Aurora was put to sleep today and I had a very rough morning having
to make this decision by myself. I tried to call several folks that may
want to help me with this decision, or perhaps come to say goodbye to her, but
did not get any return calls.......so I had to do it alone. It was one of
the hardest things I think I have ever had to do.
I have worked with this kitty for
months and months. She was one of the first ones trapped at the HWY 200
colony and she tested positive for FIV. I was determined to tame her and
get her a loving home, but she was having none of that. After months of me
spending hours working with her, I could still only pet and rub her, but could
not move quickly around her or pick her up. She was very feral and I was
probably looking at a year taming her. She was lot like
Bridgett.........after YEARS of consistent training, maybe adoptable.........but
no guarantees.
Aurora has always had a little trouble
breathing. I could hear her on occasion breathing heavy and labored.
A few days ago she stopped eating. When I tried to hand feed her, she
would scream when I touched her mouth. I watered down her food and fed her
about 3 times a day and she seemed to like that.
I knew I needed to get her to the
vet. Upon examination, her gums were inflammed and as red as Christmas
ornament............she was in real pain. She was also having trouble
breathing from the stress of just being put in the carrier and taken to the
vet.
Both vets agreed that with having to
orally medicate her twice a day (Convenia shot would not work for this
condition) and the fact that she was probably NOT going to get better due to the
FIV, they convinced me to say goodbye to her.
I had that empty sick feeling in my
stomach as I looked into her eyes for the last time...........I was all alone
and felt so awful. It's so not fair.......I hope she can forgive me and I
hope that she is pain free, breathing easy now and over the rainbow with a
really soft blankee to make biscuits on.
All for now........
Terry
