I am considering getting the teak floor grate for the head from Catalina.
Curious if anyone else has that and how they like it.
Also wonder if anyone has a picture ..... I cannot seem to find one on line.
Info from Catalina is a little hard to get.
Thanks.

Dan, I have the grate and love it. It is the same all teak construction as the cockpit grate and done well. Not at the boat but will try and get a photo later. Stu Smith Pelican #80

Stu,
I considered the teak cockpit grate but I didn’t get one. Other than looking great, what else do you like about it? Any disadvantage?
Thanks,

I got it to match the cockpit grate and did not like the looks of the head floor. I do not use the shower as I use the cockpit setup instead but if you do use the shower the grate is useful keeping you up and out of the water as it drains. Other than that IT JUST LOOKS GREAT

I just googled “ Catalina 355 factory options” and one hit was masseyyachts.com. Their options list showed a slatted teak head sole grate for $882.

My hull #119 was ordered with this teak grate in the head and I’m very happy with it. In my opinion the advantages are:
- less slippery when wet than the bare sole
- protects the bare sole from dings and chips from dropped/falling hard objects
- raises the footing level to approximately the same as the main cabin sole
- keeps your feet out of pooled water if you’re using the shower feature
The disadvantages are:
-the grate is heavy, adds weight
-has a tendency to trap dirt, debris, hair which requires removal or lifting to clean and find small dropped objects that pass through the grate spacing (had a guest who dropped a ring)
- another maintenance item if you want to clean it and apply teak oil (if desired)

And one other disadvantage unique to my boat is that I ordered a Raritan Elegance home size toilet in lieu of the standard toilet. That toilet’s base extends further over the grate than the standard toilet and makes it a challenge to find a finger grip to lift the grate for removal. I’ve solved that problem by attaching a plastic ring to some cord that is tied to an underneath slat and it’s now easy to lift.

I got a quote from Catalina for the head grate in 2021: $900, plus freight. They advised me they are usually custom made for each boat at the factory so some trimming might be needed.

I ended up buying 4 teak bath mats from Amazon and cutting them down with a CAD (cardboard aided design) template. I still need to finish the final two slats, but the attached photo should give you an idea of what’s possible.  Added benefit is the individual sections are easily removable for cleaning (or searching for lost jewelry.)

Just following up on this thread.  Decided to go for the factory grate from Catalina. Cost $1100 and took 9 months but we like it so far.

Certainly looks nice. What’s that hole in the grate towards the back?

Probably a finger lift hole.

The hole is indeed a finger lift hole…..easy to lift out for access to the floor

Hi Dan,
I'm in the process of making a teak floor grate like the one you got from Catalina and I had a couple of questions.
Does the grate have any sort of finish on it like polyurethane. Or is it just oiled without a surface coat?
On the bottom do the cross braces rest on the floor or did they put some sort of rubber/plastic feet on them?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill
Just saw this message.
My grate has no polyurethane finish….i just oil it with teak oil….so far once a year.
It sets on the cross braces….no plastic feet or anything.
Just happen to have it home for oiling so here are pics of top and bottom.
After one season we love it….looks good and keeps floor so much cleaner!
Good luck….Dan

Hi Dan,
Thanks for those pictures. That will help me a lot. Since you have the grate at home would you mind telling me how thick the slats are? I was thinking they'd be around 5/8 or 3/4.

That’s what I suspected. I was going to do a similar thing on the underside with the bracing. Their’s looks a bit larger than mine but here’s my main conundrum. The aft part of shower floor where it curves by the shower seat is sloped so that the water flows down to the sump. The floor rises up about an inch from the level part of the sump grate. Does your floor also have that slope? I’m trying to make that curved brace and because of the slope of the floor I’m having to shape the brace to conform to the varying slope. Quite tedious. In your pic of the underside it looks like all the braces are the same thickness with no allowance for any slope on the floor. Maybe it’s just the angle of the picture.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill I have same slope on the floor.
My grate has same size bracing on all pieces and seems flat to me. When in place I think it conforms to the floor….or just stays flat above the sump basin. I don’t notice any bounce in the grate. Hope that helps.

That’s interesting. I guess I’ll have to do some careful measuring, shaping, sanding, repeat. Thanks again for the pictures, they help a lot in visualizing how Catalina put it together.
