Hello All,
I am inquiring to this group via my wife Ellen's membership. I am John M. Smith we purchased the Bonnie Ree #10 from Jim Schilling in 2022, live in Ft Mitchell KY and sail on Lake Erie out of Sandusky, OH. Sold our 1998 Catalina 30 after 23 years and moved on to the 355. I am preparing to use the Asymmetrical and reviewed discussions on this forum from 2017-2018 that address the displaced stem fitting from asymmetrical use and the subsequent Bobstay fix. My question is this, looking at the stem configuration there is offset of the upper bobstay attachment point, under the bowsprit ring, to the lower attachment point to the hull, looks to be about 6 inches. I was wondering if this install presented any issues as the bobstay would be at somewhat of an angle, and if that interferes with a flush connection to the hull.  The pictures I saw looked like the bobstay fix is from the bottom of the "ring/doughnut steel base" to the hull. See pic.
Thanks
John M. Smith

I use a code zero and had the issue with the bowsprits twice.   I ended up installing the bobstay.   It has worked great for me and I use the code zero a LOT more now that I am confident in the design.  I attached a picture but I don’t believe it is clear enough to help with your question.

Sam,
Your setup is what I would do, I guess the padeye on the hull is flush but the stress would be somewhat lateral on the padeye and not directly in line, the stress somewhat medial at the other end where it attaches under the “doughnut “. Are these sideways forces ok? Sounds like your setup has held up.

I added the bob stay to my boat. Most items are readily available at most marine chandleries. The slight offset angle is not a problem. This “kit” (while no longer available as a true kit) was designed by Catalina as an after-production fix. The ring that is attached to the bottom of the bow sprit is a custom part which can be ordered from Garhauer marine. Ask for Doug. He keeps one on the shelf as a reminder so he can have his welder make a new one whenever requested. See photos below.

I am the original owner of hull #119, a 2016 model year, and just had a bobstay retrofitted professionally while the boat was on the hard  in a boatyard this past March, 2024. I purchased the ring from Garhauer, cost was about $88 plus tax and shipping, if I recall correctly. I dealt with Doug Felgenhauer, and he was a delight to work with and talk to. His email address is: dgar...@yahoo.com, direct phone number: 909-985-7513. Garhauer Marine main phone number: 909-985-9993. The ring was made to order so it took a week plus to arrive from the time I placed the order.

The other parts required are standard off-the-shelf and readily available at a well-stocked marine chandlery.

Admittedly, I’ve only flown the Code Zero twice, and that was in very light air when the Catalina dealer was demonstrating the boat to me just after commissioning. I sail on San Francisco Bay where it’s typically too windy to fly the Code Zero most of the year, so I never had an issue with the anchor/sprit fitting lifting with resultant damage. Now that I have the bobstay and the winds are starting to die down, I’m hoping to break out and use that Code Zero.

Hello,
I have procured the Bobstay kit from Garhauer, $387 with shipping, talked with Doug Felgenhauer. I am still a little concerned about the lateral stresses at the bow plate and the lower attachment at the hull. I have messaged Warren Pandy with no response. Reviewing old posts I noticed John Salley on 12/15/2017 commented that he had a copy of the Catalina engineer drawing of the Bobstay fix. John if you are still a member a copy of that drawing would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Mark,
I was thinking of doing the same as you, buying the ring from Garhauer and sourcing the rest of the hardware myself. However, I have not been able to find the tie rod with T end and toggle. Do you know where that was obtained?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi guys, was reading your posts re the bobstay for the code O. I own Pelican #80 and put the bobstay on a few years ago. I bought the whole kit from Catalina Direct and installed it myself, very easy and works and looks great. Stu Smith #80

I purchased the entire Bobstay kit from Garhauer a few weeks ago.
They provide all the components in 2 weeks for $350 + shipping.

I worked with Mike who was extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
He delivered on time at a reasonable cost and responded to emails on a timely basis.
The workmanship of the components is excellent.
