HI!

At the top of the mast, the rivet or screw, connecting a shiny metal bracket to the mast, is broken.  After reading thru Selden mast manual, materials used to repair aluminum are critical to prevent corrosion, so first post to gain insights from group on how best to repair?  photos close up and zoomed out marked with red to point to where broken

Also, while mast is down, any recommendations on wax/polish/restorer?  Noticed there are a few light scratches from the move as well.

Thank you for your thoughts! Appreciate this group and knowledge sharing.

Try to use a good amount of Tef-Gel anti-corrosion grease on any nuts/bolts/screws/rivets/threads as well as any places where dissimilar metals will touch each other.  This will help prevent the galvanic corrosion from eating away at the aluminum at the connection points.  This can't be overstated in my opinion.

Agree with recommendation for use of Tef-Gel!!

Claudia,

SuperLube Gel (ptfe) is as good as TefGel and le$$.   ACE and other good hardware stores carry it.

When mounting a dissimilar metal on the mast place an insulator (thin rubber, gorilla tape, whatever) between them, or separate them using spacers (nylon washers on the fasteners.)

Stainless fasteners are typically not a significant problem when into a mast because of the huge difference in mass of the anode (mast) vs the cathode (screws.)   It appears from the pics that your fastener failed at the stainless bracket because of the opposite -- the anode (rivet) was very small compared to the mass of the cathode (stainless bracket.)  Its also likely that it wasn't stout enough to resist the the moment force on it.

If really concerned about galvanic corrosion use the type of Well Nuts that have stainless machine screws -- which will completely isolate the fastener from the mast.  Even good quality plastic anchors and stainless screws will work to isolate fasteners.
