Hi all:

Ā

We stepped the mast earlier in the week but have problems with the furling rod intermittently turning when the winch is engaged. The mast is Type RB Mk IIl Mast extrusion F228. Ā When looking into the mast furling system and cranking the winch, I canā€™t see anything wrong or anything missing that might result in the furler slipping. The Bevel gears sit nicely and turn when engaged. So the problem appears above the gears and below the tensioning screw. Iā€™ve looked to see if there are any rivets popped but they are all in place. Is there some other locking pin that has fallen out or something that is not shown in the Selden illustration?Ā

Ā

Grateful for any suggestions to guide meā€¦.. am real new at this stuff and just canā€™t figure out what I am missing (the yard service guys and sail rep also stumped). Do the illustrations miss a pin and what is B29? the spring pin. I can see where this connects in the gears but cant see what else the B29 spring pin connects to at the top of the shaft (B23)

Ā

May thanks for any assistance or guidance

Ā

Frank

Ā Located the 8ā€ sleeve that has a small hole for accessing the S/S screw and loosened it to allow the sleeve to rise up

Ā

Ā

  • This allowed access to the main tension screw

Ā

Ā

  • All seems in order but when the winch is engaged, the furler assembly slips ā€“ it is not a problem with the gears which are all secure and in place.

My suggestion would be to call Ted Weyhrauch. Ted has done almost all the original furling systems installations for Massey in St. Pete, which means any Catalinas destined for the Southeast. His business is Innovative Marine Services in Bradenton. Heā€™s a great guy and has helped me immeasurably with issues on my 355. Iā€™m pretty sure he could tell you on the phone what may be at issue with your furler.

Be careful to call the # below because there is another Innovative Marine Services on the web. It might even help you to get a return call by saying you were referred by me (Dave Mills). Good luck.

THnx David:

Ā

Ā

Weā€™ll scratch our heads for 48 hrs more and then raise the flag and call Ted.Ā  Our boat is from St. Peteā€™s but I believe it was through a firm called Dunbar in GA to the original owner (I am the second owner).

Ā

Again, many thanks

Hi Frank,
Ā B29 rests on top of B21,B24, B25, and B26 which looks like the set of ball bearings that bear the weight of the whole furling shaft. On my mast I have two small circular inspection ports that are between the two oval ones on the port side. The lower of the small ports is right at the bevel gear level and the upper one is right at B23 level. Through those ports you can see shaft B20 being turned by upper gear (if that doesnā€™t turn then it might be pin B13 missing). Shaft B20 is connected to part # D20 and then to shaft D1 via clevis pins D23 and D21. Shaft D1 then seems to connect to D9 via 4 rivets. D10 is the locking screw that you loosen to adjust the tension in the furling shaft. That locks shaft D12 to part D9.
If you donā€™t have those two inspection ports then you might need to get one of those cheap endoscopic cameras off of Amazon. I have one and they are not very good but good enough to get into blind spots.

To be honest Iā€™m not exactly sure which mast I have. The boat is hull #77 from 2013. Probably RB Mk II.

Mine is 2018 hull # 130something.

Looking at the illustrations the masts are all fairly similar.

Thanks again Bill

It was indeed one of the pins that had fallen out. A new pin is now back in and all works fine.

SincerelyĀ
