 just wondering what you consider your Crusing RPM for the 3ym30 and normal running temp.

I have hull 3.  Temperature should settle in around 180 degrees I believe. The manual will say for sure and it may be 2-3 degrees higher. I typically run at about 2700 rpm’s. 

If your temp is off, the thermostat is pretty simple to replace. 

Be sure to check both your exhaust mixer and your impeller.  Either of those can cause issues as well.

I recently replaced my thermostat and the temp gauge shows a tad over 160. 

When I moved the boat from NJ to ME I did a lot of motoring and generally ran between 3000 and 3200. The manual says 3400 is the cruising speed with 3600 being max.

My recollection is that max rpm is 3600 and recommended operations speed is 80% so I generally operate at about 2900. 

Normal temperature for me is 160 plus a bi but sometimes it will go to 180 which my mechanic says is normal.

Last season I finally replaced the plastic raw water strainer with a brass Graco which has reduced but not eliminated the frequency of cleaning it out along with the intake hose. 

FYI I am in season 11 with 1900+ hours on the engine and my water pump started leaking so it will be replaced this week

I have always heard that diesels like to run close to wide open, so when I want maximum power, I run it at 3000 RPM. Temperature indicates about 180°, and this is in South Florida where the water is already very warm. When I bought hull number 101 with 400 hours I was surprised to find that the water pump had already been replaced. Now at 600 hours I am even more surprised to find a bad leak, so that will be water pump number three. Also, surprised by how small the strainer is and how quickly it fills with grass.

In the puget sound and I’ve played with this a bit. I think I’ve settled in crusing between 2500-2750 RPM. At 3000 it seems the motor heats up a bit more. But I think it’s happiest at 2500+

I think it depends on current or headwinds - but no wind or current, 5.5-5.7 or so. Any headwinds and it slows down to about 4.8-5 knots.

My temperature ran 157-162 last year. I put on a new exhaust elbow last November and temperature now runs 164-167.  Not sure why. I am still trying to determine the optimum rpm now that I have a Brunton autoprop with self adjusting pitch. It is supposed to give more speed and it does. You might be interested in my updated rpm curve. The original graph was by the previous owner. I updated it by hand with blue ink after repeating with autoprop.

What’s your hull number? We have 94, and the difference in quality and thickness of metal of the mixing elbow is very different between the original one that came with the boat, and the new one we put on after it failed. We are in freshwater, and most people do not ever have to replace it. That is more of a saltwater thing. That would be my only guess as to why you have a different temperature now.

My hull # is 126 (2017). Mixing elbow was cast iron and boat is in salt water. The threaded connector cracked (6 years and 650 hours). I replaced the whole thing with a stainless steel one from HDI marine. The hose barb on the new unit was for 1/2” hose instead of the prior 5/8” hose. I couldn’t find a new 5/8” barb with the thread to fit new elbow. So I found a hose reducer and reduced the last foot of 5/8” hose to 1/2” hose just before the attachment to the new elbow. I’m not sure why the temperature went up, but it isn’t enough to concern me.
