I’m on sails from 2012 and thinking it’s about time for new ones. Does anyone have experience purchasing new sails and can offer some guidance? Best, Evan

I just went back to Doyle and bought the originals.   It saved me thinking too much.

I replaced mainsail 2 years ago. New sail from Quantum sails works great. Much improvement over original mainsail.

Ernie,

Can you be more specific as to how the new main is improved over the original. Does it shape better? Does it have vertical battens? Please elaborate.

Thanks,

Sure. At Ease is a 2011 boat, presumably with original sail. Unfortunately the main would hang up either going into the mast or coming out. Quantum was able to tighten up the sail, but that only improved it for one season. So, new mainsail two years ago - never had a problem with deploying or retrieving the main since. Just really easy and slick. As we say on At Ease, these roller furling mains are really great now that it works.

I bought new sails last Autumn.  The originals were jamming with the batten pockets while furling, occasionally quite severely.  The sails were only 5 years old, but the boat was in a charter fleet before we bought her, and I suspect the sails weren’t treated that well.

I would suggest finding a responsive, preferably local sail loft.  I worked with Ullman Sails (I live in Anacortes, WA) and they were fantastic.  They came and measured the boat rather than just giving me instructions to do it on my own (which they guaranteed for an accurate fit, to be fixed at their expense if they were off), installed them and later came and fine tuned the installation with excellent service after the sale.  Cost less than online ordering options as well.

I bought a new main without battens from Hyde and love it.  The price was much better than Doyle and Ullman.  I can pass on a point of contact if you like.

Erni, I've bee corresponding with Quantum; they've been super helpful so I think I will go with them. The last big decision - cross cut versus tri-radial. Cross cut is about 2K cheaper, but the tri-radial will hold shape a bit longer. Which way did you go? Evan

I went with the less expensive. Have been completely satisfied. So nice to have the sails just go in and out without any drama.

Evan-

One more thing. If you are near the Quantum loft be sure to have them take the measurements at your boat and then come by to assist installing the sails. The battons installation was not obvious and I put them in incorrectly initially.

Like Vin Gade, I recently replaced the main on #62 with a radial cut sail with slight negative roach and NO battens (which were causing stuck issues as others have experienced) - about a 5% loss of sail area but really reliable furling/unfurling, good shape and therefore no detectable loss of drive. Most of my sailing in South Australia is solo, so I really, really can't have the main jamming, especially when up in a stiff breeze. Doyle Australia designed and made the sail.

Thanks for all of the info on sails - enormously helpful!! I decided to go with Quantum tri-radials for the headsail and main, with three battens in the main. I sailed from Provincetown MA to Gloucester MA to meet Jim who works with Quantum - he measured for the new sails. With my help, it took about three hours. Nothing I could do myself or would want to with this much $$ on the line. I won't have them on the boat till next season but will let you all know how it works out. Thanks!
