Refrigeration replacement?

Has anyone else had to replace the entire refrigeration unit? I have had issues with mine (hull 72) since new. This spring it didn't work at all and after lengthy exploration some leaks were found in an aluminum tube caused by apparent corrosion, which was repaired with some sealant. It still didn't work and it was discovered the condenser is plugged and the compressor was somehow compromised. The recommendation was to replace everything.

I am suspicious that whatever the original issue was may have been aggravated by a possibly incompetent dealer refrigeration contractor, but I have no proof of this.

The boat has always been in fresh water. Is it possible the supposed corrosion was actually a defect?

Anyone else with similar issues? If so, how was it resolved?

After reading your input I was confused. I may be reading it incorrectly but
it sounds like the unit you are speaking of was not installed by Catalina
and is it the refrigeration or the AC unit you are talking about?

My apologies. It is the original refrigerator unit installed at the factory.

Oh! My 355 is #80. I went to the factory when it was being built and
specifically asked them about the fridge. I came from a Pacific Seacraft
which had a separate compressor unit for the fridge and if it went south it
was easily replaced without messing with the actual refer. I asked them
about the 355 unit and voiced my concern about it being all one unit, the
compressor and guts all part of the single unit. I was told that in the
event it went south the whole unit would need to be replaced as a single
unit. Apparently Catalina has written instructions as to what needs to be
done starting with the sink plumbing being disassembled, the counter top
removed, the unit pulled and a replacement set in place. They say the whole
job should take about 5 to 6 hours, but I figure that is if someone who
knows what they are doing is the fixer. This was one of my main dislikes
about the Catalina but I figured I would cross that bridge when I came to
it. My unit has been running 24/7 since Feb. 2013 and works as advertised,
but I know the problem is looming out there. Take care and good luck.

On a slightly different topic - Is it better to keep the fridge on all the time?  For the past 3 years I have kept the fridge off with the lid & door open while the boat is not in use.  Every 2 weeks or so I would have it on for 2-3 days then turn it off again.  I do this partially because it is more economical not to have it on all the time (though I think the cost is very low), but also because I think it may last longer if I don't have it on all the time.  A friend recently said that they like to be on consistently.

Thanks,

i believe it is important to run regularly to lubricate the unit, that said i only run ours every 2-3 weeks when we go away for weekends, most day sailing we do not bother

Not to hijack this thread, but we are currently on a multi week cruise and since the Fridge is by far the biggest drain on amps, I've done everything I can to optimize insulation (thanks to Jim Scherzi and Doug Ward for there tips and tricks).
However the inevitable frosting of the freezer unit is causing the compressor to work overtime.
My question is does anyone have a suggestion on a way to quickly defrost/remove the buildup without shutting down or turning off the fridge? We don't have access to shore power so a hair dryer is not an option. We're trying to avoid losing our provisions while getting the frost off??

Thanks....

When I need to defrost a small countertop height fridge/freezer, I use a large pan of boiling water and close it up. Obviously you have to pull out the provisions and pull a MacGyver to temporarily store and insulate them (foam, cushions,  clothing,?). A desiccant unit should be added to keep the air dry as possible. If you can get any desiccant temporarily just having it in there would help.

BTW I carry a 12 V hair dryer, 12 V blender, 12 V soldering iron, etc. etc. Also a Converter to recharge tool batteries when needed.

You would be surprised how many things do not need refrigeration for a short period of time. My friend Karen at good old boat did an article a few years ago listing them.

Good luck,
Ken

I am sure you have a lot more experience than me and I don't think it solves your defrost fast enough.  However, I was able to finally get my unit from frosting up so much by reaching into the freezer and dialing it back a lot.

It would frost up so much I couldn't get the top door on the whole unit to shut.  Now it has stopped frosting and it still freezes.

Not much help I am sure - good luck

Sam

Jon, I have found that turning the fridge off for 4 hours every other night does the trick without raising the temp too much. Typically rises 5 degrees during the off cycle, then runs cooler for the next 48 hours. No spoilage yet.  I have been sailing for 3 months on this trip and shutting off fridge for 4 hours every other night when not being opened.  Florida to Bahamas to NY.  Chris

I have used the kitchen spray faucet handle.  It quickly melts the frost and then sponge the water out with a sponge.

Thanks all for the suggestions! Even with a couple of H2out desiccants and trying not to open the fridge unless necessary, this trip has had a lot of humidity. I'll try turning it off for 4 hours and see what happens.
Jim, thanks for the info. I also installed the Accurite remote thermometer that you recommended which helps monitoring the temp without opening...

Regards,
Jon

i had my refrigerator replaced when I got the boat 5 years ago - there were big “bubbles” like outward dents on the bottom and sides. I didn’t accept that and asked and received a new refrigerator. it did take about 4 hours for them to replace it - but not a “can’t do” event. Yes Catalina has directions for removal and installation.

Thanks for all of the input everyone. Much appreciated. This is a great resource.

My dealer is still thinking that replacing compressor/condenser is the way to go but I am thinking doing a full unit swap may be the way to go, especially if Catalina agrees. May I ask who you were talking to at Catalina about the full swap out?

As I recall, I believe it was Warren Pandy during my walk through at the
factory. I went back there during the build to see the construction process
although I was not shown much in the way of building techniques. I did get a
lot of input however during the trip such as finding out that the interior
material I had selected was not being used by their vendor which I corrected
while there. Please let me know what they come up with as far as compressor
replacement only as I would much prefer to left satee cushions to get at it
rather than pull all the plumbing and counter top to replace the entire
unit. Stu on Pelican #80

Paul, I have as yet, not had to replace my fridge however I am told Catalina has instructions as to how to complete the task already written out. I would suggest you contact them and see what information they can provide. Stu Smith #80

Does anyone know where the air intake is for the fridge condenser.  The fan outlet is under the sbd seat near the freshwater pump area.  I want to make sure there is good airflow in and out of the condenser unit for max cooling.  Thanks

There is a vent in cabinet under the stove. I was contemplating making the opening larger and installing a larger vent but there no room.

Thanks Ken.  I'll pull the oven out and have a look.
