Hi,

I have an intriguing problem.  During spring commissioning (and with mast electrics disconnected), I get some strange voltage readings when switching between batteries using the battery isolator switch:

Battery 1 +2 shows 12.8 volts
Battery 1 shows 20 volts
Battery 2 shows 0 volts.

All systems seem to work fine.

Not sure what's going on. Does anyone have any experience of high voltage or any suggestions as to where to start looking forvthe cause?

The boat is a 2018 355.

Many thanks

Frank

Frank - I don't have the answer as it would require verifying the voltage at each battery, then the selector switch, then the meter using a voltmeter.  I have something similar going on with hull 146, a 2019 C355 I purchased in January this year.  My issue arose this weekend when running the refrigerator, etc. while on marina power and resulting in a shut down due to low voltage.  The refrig unit does that.  The lights later, about 7 hours, flickered. Then the admiral said she noticed a few other signs but didn't want to alarm me.

Readings went to 11.6 for #1 on voltmeter, and 12.8 for #2 on voltmeter.  Both batteries cool.  120 volt/30 Amp service showing same.

I learned on hull 146 the voltmeter on the panel has batt 1 the same as the battery selector switch under the chart table as 2, and vice versa.  This did not show up during the January survey and not on the April sea trial. The battery charger (Pro-Nautic) bank one is not lit, but two is and is correct.

So, I can't give you the answer, but I am in the same boat, so to speak.  If I figure it out I will post a reply.

Bill,
I would check the connections on the back of the main circuit breaker which is between the two battery switches under the nav desk. Mine were loose and in this conversation on the 355 group someone else had a similar problem: https://groups.google.com/g/catalina355/c/EoNmyUBJQJQ/m/f0PsRmaGAQAJ

Safety note. You might want to disconnect the positive cables from the two batteries before you go mucking around with the circuit breaker connections and the battery switch connections.

Many thanks.

Someone suggested it might be some corrosion on the battery isolator switch. Will keep investigating.

Not to hijack Frank's thread, but as an update I pulled the panel below the chart table yesterday.  Very difficult to get it out due to 1/0 wires, but did get it out enough.  Connections were tight.  Connections to batteries redone.  Checked fuses at battery from charger and one had complete circuit (ohms), the other, none so it is blown.  The fuse is easy, but still searching for the cause.  Will buy two fuses.  KTK-40s for mine.
If was marina surge, would expect it to have toasted both fuses.
