Hi Bruce, and welcome - hope your purchase works out. Probably the easiest route to purchase the bowsprit is to get the complete kit, along with the bobstay upgrade, from the Catalina Yachts parts department. They can put together the Selden sprit (already shortened to the correct length), along with the required Selden bow ring with a custom-made base that simply bolts to the bracket that all 355's have welded to the anchor roller, and the bobstay kit which includes another custom part that allows simple bolt-on installation, with all parts of the correct dimensions right out of the box. Their prices are usually competitive. I purchased the bowsprit itself for $485 from West Marine during their Cyber Monday sale. It was shipped directly from Selden, and needs to be shortened to the correct length. The custom Selden bow ring came from Catalina, and was $154; the bobstay kit was $385, so the total was around $1000.

Although the sprit can be installed without the bobstay, the upward force from the tack of the spinnaker can deform the bow roller assembly and pull it up from the deck - there is a posting on this forum that mentions this happening to an owner. Catalina redesigned the bow roller on later boats (I think at some point in the 2014 or 2015 model runs) so they no longer require the bobstay.

The parts manager at the factory in Florida is Len Keller; his phone # is 727-544-6681, ext 266. The email and physical addresses are on the Catalina Yachts website. Hope this helps.

John, I have looked all over the Catalina website and cannot, for the life
of me, locate the bowsprit upgrade (bobstay). Where did you find it?

Hey Stu -
Catalina doesn’t list parts online. I had a lengthy email exchange with Warren Pandy (Cutomer Service) and Len Keller (Parts Department manager) to determine what was needed. Len just went through this with me a month ago, and undoubtedly will remember! I’d suggest emailing or calling him - everyone at the factory was great to work with and quite helpful.

I spoke to the good folks there a few weeks back and they do not have any kits.  They suggested that Garhauer might but they don't. The supplied diagram (a few posts back) has all the part numbers/descriptions so you could source each item separately.

That's odd. Len Keller just put the complete kit together for me 3 weeks ago. I don't know that Catalina keeps the parts on site; I got the impression they had to obtain them from their suppliers, but they shipped me all the parts, together, even the required nuts and bolts. I think they contract with Garhauer to produce the welded stainless plate and ring that bolts to the bottom of the bow roller; it is drilled to the same bolt pattern as the Selden bow ring mounting plate and the bow roller attachment plate. The other parts could probably be sourced elsewhere, although the threaded tie rod with the lower end toggle has to be a specific length.

Bob - who did you speak to at Catalina? Len just recently took over as the parts manager. When I visited the factory in October, they didn't have a permanent person in that department, so the service was sometimes a little "iffy".

John - I spoke with Warren around Dec 18th. At that point he said they'd only added it to one boat on the line and shipped it to one boat which I gather was you.

Hi John, I went ahead and contacted Catalina for the bowsprit upgrade and
they sent me the parts. Installation was pretty straight forward and was
fairly easy, pretty scarey drilling into the bow but it is solid glass and
no big deal in the end. Thanks for the info Stu Smith Pelican #80

Hi Stu -
Glad to hear the installation wasn’t too painful. I am still waiting for a warm spell before I install mine. Did you purchase the sprit itself from Catalina? If so, was it already cut to the correct length (around 40”)?

Yes, I already had the bowsprit and it was cut appropriately by mfg. All I
got for the fix was the hardware for the bobstay.

Finally got enough of a break from the weather to get the bowsprit ring and bobstay installed. As Stu noted, it’s not a difficult installation (although did require climbing into the forepeak to bed and tighten the lower bobstay ring nuts). I’m attaching a couple of pictures. I stripped one of the bolts on the upper anchor roller support, and took the pictures prior to replacing it the next day, in case anyone notices the missing bolt!

Hi John,

so is there a 'part #' for this or just a reach out to catalina direct and ask for the bobstay kit.?

Great job on the install, although why would they not just re-use the bottom bolt on the nose plate.?

Lenny and Jon, After looking at the attached photo the install looks just like mine. Regard to the bottom bolts, I used the same bolts provided with the original set-up. It provided enough room for the new under plate, the original compression washer, the lock nut, and finally the end bold that was originally provided. It looks just like it did to begin with. There is no part number, I simply asked Catalina for the bobstay upgrade and they provided me with the whole deal. cost was right at $400 including shipping.

I added cap nuts to the bolts as well (not shown in the photos) to decrease the chance of snagging lines on the bolt ends. The bottom plate supplied in the kit has a slot machined into it to allow for the gusset on the bottom of the mounting plate that’s welded to the anchor roller. Note that the kit is from Catalina Yachts parts department, not Catalina Direct.
