For those who have one of the bronze Groco raw water strainers: You can greatly simplify your winterizing routine. For Air Conditioners I suppose you could also use this setup to run a descaler or cleaning solution through them.
* Purchase a second clear plastic screw on cap for the strainer
* Buy a brass NPT to Male Garden hose (MHT) fitting and an NPT locking nut. Be sure it's long enough so that you can easily access the garden hose threads.
* Drill a hole in the groco strainer cap that the NPT side of the brass fitting can fit through. Since it's plastic, clamp it carefully and it's best if you clamp it down and use a small hole saw to drill this so that it doesn't break or get out of hand.
* Put the fitting through, with the garden hose side out. Apply a little sealant on the inside and spin on the locking nut on the inside.
Now, you can swap your normal strainer lid or engine strainer bowl for one that you can connect a short hose with a garden hose end to the strainer to run antifreeze or whatever. Can even use this to gently push a little air in to unclog the intake thru-hull if you're careful.
We have a same setup with the engine raw water strainer. For that we have a second strainer bowl with a garden hose fitting. We have a winterizing jug that has a shutoff valve and a hose that we use to winterize the engine. Super easy.
