We just completed the Gulf Crossing from Tampa area to Pensacola. We used more fuel and she ran slower than expected. (5.4k, 1g/hr).  I  wanted to know anyone has had similar experience or can give guidance for trouble shooting this problem.

Vessel and water conditions below.
  • Boat data: Average motor speed 5.74k, motor distance 295 nm, fuel consumption 1g/hr.  I am 100% positive the numbers are correct.
  • Gulf Crossing - we had calm waters- wave ht <0.7,  not much wind, 5 to 8 kn, mainly on the nose or  60 degrees port.
  • Boat is not overweighted and the bottom was cleaned prior to departure.
  • We ran our boat around 2500 RPM, and at times between 2600 to 2800 RPM.
  • Looking at the Yanmar 3YM30 fuel consumption vs engine speed chart, I would expect our fuel consumption to be lower since we did not stay at 2800 RPM consistently.
  • I plan to dive on the prop to make sure we didn't pick up a crab pot or object which would affect the vessel performance. I feel this is unlikely as the controls were smooth.
Appreciate any suggestions or experience you have with this.

I think the very first thing I would check is the exhaust elbow. 174 sounds like a pretty new boat but I'd still check that. Just remove the exhaust hose from the elbow and use a mirror or endoscopic camera to check for blockages in the elbow. Mine was pretty corroded at around 500hrs. Replaced with stainless one from HD Marine.

At 2500rpm about 4 liters per hour which is about 1 gallon per hour. Sounds right to me.

My fuel data is reasonably accurate and over 566 hrs I used 400 gal. of diesel which works out to about .71 g/hr. I usually run at around 2500 to 3000 rpm making 5-6 kt. through the water (not SOG).

Thanks everyone for the information. Will check the exhaust and perform SOG/STW calculations.
Happy sailing!

A bit of fuel consumption from recent 425 mile trip circumnavigating the Delmarva Peninsula. Used engine motoring or motor sailing for 38 hours. Used 25 gallons of diesel. This is 0.66 gph which is just slightly over the predicted 0.63 for 2200 rpm which is what I run at. I have a Brunton autoprop with self adjusting pitch so I get (without sails up)  6-7 kts through water with that rpm. Average about 6.2 to 6.4. Occasionally see 7.2 and sometimes motoring into a headwind with waves as low as 5.5-5.8.
