Hi Gang!

Has anyone installed a WIFI booster or extender to enhance the signal aboard the boat? We are in a marina that normally has had good reception but is failing often as we attempt to stream on our smart TV. Thanks for your help!

Best,

Jim

Hi Jim, I do not have a booster on the boat however I do in my home. EERO is referred to as a mesh booster and consists of a series of small pods placed throughout the house. They come in  1 2 or 3 pod groups and I bet 1 would do the trick. Im not a techie but think it might be worth a try, look them up on the internet and you decide.

Jim,

I haven't on the boat but have in other situations.
The key is that you must have a decent signal AT the booster/extender. Then it gets leap-frogged to another farther away location(s.)  It could be possible that it's JUST marginal at a TV location and might benefit from an extender located at the precise best location (say maybe near a companionway or in a cockpit) and then would fill the boat with full bars.  But, I found that in another situation that it just wouldn't work (this happened to be trying to extend WiFi down and inside a row of 7 motel (i.e., "motor court") rooms from a utility room at the end.  The distance was too great and was brick construction, so I had to extend the WiFi router antenna to the mid-point of the stretch.  One should work great if, say, you had a closer point to the WiFi source to plug it in, but alas.....

BTW, sailboats are for sailing!

Thanks, K Man!!

Definitely for sailing unless you are lucky enough to live on it 24/7 in the summer!! 😎
Thanks for the advice on the WIFI!

When I had the boat commissioned in 2016 I had an Island Time WiFi booster installed. See www.islandtimepc.com

This booster was recommended by the Catalina dealer and was professionally installed. The ON/OFF switch is on the electrical panel with the antenna mounted on the mast, and that’s all you see. The system is simple, effective and and has been trouble-free.
