So, in light of the liquidation going on, I wonder if there is any possible way to obtain any of the fabrication information or records that Catalina had the C355 hulls (or any of them) before they're destroyed?

I wonder if some of the Catalina Owner's groups could see if records could be obtained since they're likely of no use to anyone else.  If they haven't hit the dumpster yet, maybe the auction house could fill us in on how we might obtain those.

I'd bet that other active associations might be interested as well.

Any ideas?

Jeff, thats a good point but they have some value……I understand that is how Pacific Seacraft was able to survive as an example. New ownership required the drawings, diagrams, etc on their models so that could be replicated and built later, which happened. The drawings for the 355 and other series needs to be somehow acquired and maintained…..Have too believe that this may be offered at the upcoming auction🤔⛵️.

I think that's try 6 to a point. Since nobody is buying the business and those who buy the molds would want enough docs to build boats from them, there may be docs on nearly 20k hulls in the files.

If someone were to buy those records, maybe they could be made available to owners association's for some minimal cost to help out the owners.

Seems like it's worth a conversation and maybe an attempt to get associations together to obtain what's available.

Jeff

Agree. I think Seacraft was out for a while until someone bought the diagrams. They wanted it from what I understand more to build new boats, versus doing anything with existing boats but who knows. That would be great if someone bought the Catalina diagrams  and then sold the individual boat diagram to the owners. I know I would like to buy mine.

Note that, per Warren Pandy, many old records (out of production models, obviously) were in dead storage and lost in a flood.

But, take action - contact the auction house or show up and review what is there. Talk is just talk.

Agree, talk is just talk but the 355 "recently" ended its production and went to the 356. Those are not old records. Not sure if anyone on this chain is attending the auction. I hope so.......or at least contact the auction house. If anyone has their contact #, I would  and i suspect others would call. Anyone on this distribution has a vested stake in what happens.....

Regards,

Walter

If the associations collectively bought them, then current owners could get copies and future owners could also get a copy if they didn't get them during their purchase.

I doubt that any of the associations have the treasury.
Also trying g to put together the funds from individuals would be a Herculean  task.
However I will volunteer to participate if there is a sufficient interest

The auction info was in the Substack article:

At the moment the auction house website  https://www.auctionzip.com/Listings/4140997.html  is displaying 336 photos of Catalina items, but owner Greg Farner said that as the auction date nears he expects that total to grow to a “couple thousand.”

Let us know what you find out, but I suspect that not much would be learned until the “inspection day” and see who shows up to “inspect.”

I don't know where individual associations or groups thereof would get the $ (or authorization under their charters) to start buying stuff in 2 weeks at an auction (or otherwise) for posterity.  The coordination would be nightmarish.

It might be that, if records (ie, file cabinets and flat files, possibly dead files?) are bought by a builder some deal might be done afterward.
Or if a builder(s) does not buy them, the records might be “leftovers” from the auction but I would not count on that occurring.

Does anyone know if everything (especially all records) in CA ended up in FL?

The auction catalog is available now. It's just a pdf listing all the lots.

Walter how did you make out talking to Bsy Area auction house?  Any info on whether the file cabinets and flat files hold a treasure trove?
