Since being dumped by their owners in nearby woods, several cats have
called the Clara Barton rest stop on the New Jersey Turnpike their
home. The Turnpike Authority was working with a local SPCA to TNR the
cats, and decreased the colony from around 100 to a very small number
(employees suspect there are less than a dozen cats still there). Now
that the cost of tolls is to rise, the Turnpike Authority no longer
working with the SPCA and is now planning to trap and kill the
remaining cats. Turnpike employees have also been threatened with
dismissal, if they feed the cats.

We are urging our members to please contact the New Jersey Turnpike
Authority to encourage them to continue to work with the SPCA to use
TNR to control the colony’s number and to allow employees to care for
the cats. If you pay toll on this road, your money will, in part, be
used to trap and kill these cats, so please express your disapproval
with the NJ Turnpike Authority’s decision.
