Dear Supervisors:

Please preserve the SFFD-Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT); do not reduce the NERT budget.

Reducing the already small budget for the NERT program will devastate this essential safety preparedness program.  The potential magnitude of a disaster in San Francisco will require citizens who are prepared to take care of themselves, and their neighbors.  NERT was created at the request of the residents of the Marina District to serve this exact purpose, in the aftermath of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.

NERT is the only free, hands-on program in San Francisco providing disaster-preparedness training.  For the safety and effectiveness of the participants it MUST be taught by professional first responders from the San Francisco Fire Department.  The multiplier effect of the citizens’ preparedness and response makes this program provide one of the greatest returns on investment for San Francisco government.

Please help NERT Do the most good for the most people.  Please do not cut the NERT budget.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully,

/s/ Nick
