What happened to the main build agent on TC?

I did stop it. We are making some changes on the server, and the agent
from now on it will be running only for an hour per day: from 00:30 to
01:30 (PST).

That's not good.
Why are you setting it up like that?

It will make building for releases even more painful

Cause we (me and hammett) need that cpu and hd throughput elsewhere.

Henry,

If you don't have the capacity to run it anymore, I'm confident I can provide something.

So, it seems, for the time being, my server is the only game in town.  (That's a scary thought)  Anything I can do to it to ease the process?  (aside from getting it to run Linux...)

Truth,

Oh, just the build agent is available for 1h a day. I thought you also meant the dashboard, because I'd expect that the web server would use more CPU and disk I/O than the couple of builds run by the agent.

We have quite a bunch of websites running in the collocated server.
When the BA runs, it hogs the cpu. I'd prefer that we even get rid of
it soon.

So should we be looking for someone willing to sponsor a VM dedicated to the build server then?

Cheers Jono,

so what exactly are you suggesting and able to offer (and on what terms)?

@K
My offer still stands.

Hosting the dashboard and a build agent on a single machine.

I might be able to host a VM, but I haven't got the networking set up for that at the moment.

I can fairly easily provide a physical AMD Fusion Dual Core 1.8Ghz (IIRC) with as much RAM as it takes, because I know TeamCity, well Tomcat loves that RAM. Shouldn't have any problems providing RDP access to it, and can put any version of Windows Sever on it. Being physical with a single disk I'd sort something out with backups.

Let me know if you are aware of other requirements.

I should have also mentioned that since it'll be at home I can't provide a 99.9% uptime SLA :)

However it'll be on a UPS and a pretty stable internet connection.

Doesn't your ISP prohibit you from running any servers on your home ADSL? I know mine does :|

I've slowly been moving things into the cloud with Google Apps, GitHub and Azure Web Sites, but a dual core VM with 4GB of RAM is well over $100/mo.

ok, that sounds good to me.

Especially if we can keep James' build agent for .NET 4 builds and the new one for .NET 4.5

Hammett, could I get a copy of the TeamCity data to restore.

Thanks

Anything I can do to help?

I am planning to set the machine up today.

I was waiting for a copy of the TeamCity data (C:\Users\henryc\.BuildServer" and the MSSQL database), however I just remembered the dashboard has a feature to create and download a backup, so I'm doing that now. I should be good to get it set up.

Yer, we are getting a good drenching, luckily it doesn't look like what happened in 2011 though.

If all goes well, I should have it set up today.

I'm going to need to get a copy of the TeamCity data from the server, otherwise we'll loose all the artifacts, since the backup feature doesn't let you include artifacts.

I'll need the following:
* C:\Users\henryc\.BuildServer (you can exclude the caches directory; C:/Users/henryc/.BuildServer/system/caches)
* The SQL Server database

It is best to stop TeamCity, then copy the files.

Krzysztof, with the state of many of the builds on the current TeamCity instance being broken in some way, how adverse are you to just starting again and reconfiguring TC fresh? I'm happy to set up the projects again, but we'll need to sort through why things are broken, and either change the config, env or code/scripts.

For starters, I'm going to have to make some changes to the Windsor WCF unit tests not to listen on port 80, because TeamCity has that port not IIS on this machine so they can't share. I'd like to clean up the build environment a bit, and have started documenting it while testing on a sandbox VM running on my desktop.

Hey Jono,

I think most of the failures (except mono builds) on Windsor's side are due to the build agent configuration.

It would pass on the other build agent.

But if you feel starting from scratch would be less friction, go for it.

Yep agreed, Windsor is failing due to differences in build agents. Some of the others like ActiveRecord and NVelocity are failing because of VCS problems.

Do you have any other channel to contact Hammett or Henry to get a copy of the TeamCity data, otherwise I can also just go with what I've got which doesn't include the artifacts but does include all the configuration?

To keep everyone in the loop, the new TeamCity instance is ready to go. We've just waiting for the DNS records to be changed.
