The first step in adding members to a WhatsApp group from a spreadsheet file is to export the sheet to a CSV file. All spreadsheet editors have an option to export to CSV format. The sheet should contain exactly two columns, the first column being the Name and Phone Number, the second.
The activity level in these groups is measured using the number of messages each participant sends. But imagine being an admin in multiple groups of over 300 participants each and having to "weed" out inactive members weekly or monthly from each of them, as the case may be. It's exhausting and often unrealistic to search through each participant's phone number or contact name to count the number of messages sent within a time frame. Such a strenuous task is not worth it for admins with any form of daily life activity beyond obsessing about a social media group.
How Do I Protect Myself? Be very wary of calls from unknown numbers on WhatsApp, especially if they don't follow the traditional mobile/landline format used in your country. In reality, however, all unknown numbers should be treated with suspicion.
The simple rule for avoiding WhatsApp scams is this: Never answer WhatsApp messages or calls from numbers you don't recognize, and never click on links included in WhatsApp messages from unknown numbers.
If you are a Whatsapp user, you must be aware of a Whatsapp Group. Through a Whatsapp group, communication with multiple people is possible simultaneously. You can invite and add more people to the group as and when required. It is a great platform to schedule activities, plan get-togethers or chat with your coworkers.
The Whatsapp group is limited to adding 256 people in it, while Communities have the option of adding as many groups as they can in a community. The number of individual contacts is also there in the community.
Adding a Whatsapp bot to the group chats can help you send alerts to keep the group members updated, also, they may get easy access to contact you whenever they need. Thus, a bot may be added to a Whatsapp group differently.
Conversational remembering entails that people engage in recalling past experiences, which may themselves have been shared. Conversational remembering comes with social benefits for the person telling the narrative and the one receiving it (e.g., developing and strengthening friendships, fostering entertainment, and consolidating group identity). COVID-19 lockdowns have significantly affected social interaction, including face-to-face interactions where conversational remembering occurs. The aim of this study was to explore how WhatsApp group messages supported conversational remembering in a large group of friends living in Buenos Aires where a complete lockdown was established between 19 March 2020 and 6 November 2020. To accomplish such aim, we conducted a mixed-methods longitudinal study. The data consisted of 32,810 WhatsApp group messages collected over a period of 700 consecutive days, from 13 April 2019 to 13 March 2021. Our study shows that WhatsApp group messages enabled group members to keep connected during the COVID-19 lockdown period. This occurred by remembering together situations, events, and actions associated with the group's identity. The use of WhatsApp group messages may have represented an adaptive collective behaviour in response to changes in global social norms.
Although WhatsApp has increased the number of participants for group voice calls, users won't be able to enjoy this on the desktop app. This is because only one-on-one calls (voice and video) are supported on the desktop version of the messaging app. However, WhatsApp did say back in 2021 that it is working on bringing support for group calls to the desktop app in the future. In addition to increasing the number of participants on a group call, other features that are coming to WhatsApp soon include Reactions (emoji), Admin Delete which gives group admins the ability to delete messages from any member, and an increase in the file-sharing limit from 100MB to 2GB.
In June 2023, a feature called WhatsApp Channels was launched which allows content creators, public figures and organizations to send newsletter-like broadcasts to large numbers of users. Unlike messages in groups or private chats, channels are not end-to-end encrypted.[163] Channels were initially only available to users in Colombia and Singapore, then later Egypt, Chile, Malaysia, Morocco, Ukraine, Kenya and Peru before becoming widely available in September 2023.[164][165][166][167]
In November 2023, WhatsApp added a "voice chat" feature for groups with more than 32 members. Unlike their 32-person group calls, starting a voice chat doesn't call all group members directly; they instead receive a notification to join the voice chat.[171] WhatsApp also began rolling out support for sending login codes to a linked email address, rather than via SMS.[172] In a later update on November 30, WhatsApp added a Secret Code feature, which allows those who use locked chats to enter a unique password that hides those chats from view when unlocking the app.[173][174]
WhatsApp software automatically compares all the phone numbers from the device's address book with its central database of WhatsApp users to automatically add contacts to the user's WhatsApp contact list. Previously the Android and Nokia Series 40 versions used an MD5-hashed, reversed-version of the phone's IMEI as password,[211] while the iOS version used the phone's Wi-Fi MAC address instead of IMEI.[212][213] A 2012 update implemented generation of a random password on the server side.[214] Alternatively a user can send to any contact in the WhatsApp database through the url =[phone number] where [phone number] is the number of the contact including the country code.
On November 18, 2014, Open Whisper Systems announced a partnership with WhatsApp to provide end-to-end encryption by incorporating the encryption protocol used in Signal into each WhatsApp client platform.[227] Open Whisper Systems said that they had already incorporated the protocol into the latest WhatsApp client for Android, and that support for other clients, group/media messages, and key verification would be coming soon after.[228] WhatsApp confirmed the partnership to reporters, but there was no announcement or documentation about the encryption feature on the official website, and further requests for comment were declined.[229] In April 2015, German magazine Heise security used ARP spoofing to confirm that the protocol had been implemented for Android-to-Android messages, and that WhatsApp messages from or to iPhones running iOS were still not end-to-end encrypted.[230] They expressed the concern that regular WhatsApp users still could not tell the difference between end-to-end encrypted messages and regular messages.[230]
In July 2017, WhatsApp received permission from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to enter into partnership with multiple Indian banks,[238] for transactions over Unified Payments Interface (UPI),[239] which relies on mobile phone numbers to make account-to-account transfers.[240] In November 2020, UPI payments via WhatsApp were initially restricted to 20 million users,[241] and to 100 million users in April 2022,[242] and became generally available to everyone in August 2022.[243]
In April 2020, the NSO Group held its governmental clients accountable for the allegation of human rights abuses by WhatsApp. In its revelation via documents received from court, the group claimed that the lawsuit brought against the company by WhatsApp threatened to infringe on its clients' "national security and foreign policy concerns". However, the company did not reveal names of the end users, which according to a research by Citizen Lab include, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.[277]
In April 2017, nearly 300 WhatsApp groups with about 250 members each were reportedly being used to mobilize stone-pelters in Jammu and Kashmir to disrupt security forces' operations at encounter sites. According to police, 90% of these groups were closed down after police contacted their admins.[312] Further, after a six-month probe which involved the infiltration of 79 WhatsApp groups, the National Investigation Agency reported that out of about 6386 members and admins of these groups, about 1000 were residents of Pakistan and gulf nations. Further, for their help in negating anti-terror operations, the Indian stone pelters were getting funded through barter trade from Pakistan and other indirect means.[313]
