Dear Colleagues,

I am very excited to see CIAT's renewed interest in cassava modeling as
expressed by the recent set of e-mails. Last week I participated in a
meeting with Jerry Nelson, IFPRI, and Jim Jones, Ken Boote, Sentold
Asseng, and Cheryl Porter, University of Florida, to discuss the
modeling activities under the auspices of the Global Futures Project for
the coming year. One of the priorities is the cassava model. During this
past year I have worked somewhat with Bernardo Creamer and Carolina
Gonzales and they have been frustrated due to the lack of progress. As
part of our cooperation with the GF Project, I have been tasked to work
with you if you are interested. I am currently responsible for the
coordination of DSSAT and its associated models, including the cassava
work. I also have worked extensively with Dr. Attachai Jintrawet, Chiang
Mai University, and Vinai Sarawat, Field Crops Research in Thailand, and
they have some great data sets already available. If you agree, I would
like to visit CIAT for two or three days and to meet with as many people
as possible who are interested in cassava modeling. We should discuss
the current status of the cassava model in DSSAT, other modeling
approaches you are interested in, data requirements for model
calibration and evaluation, and some clear plans to move forward.
Unfortunately my calendar is somewhat full right now due the upcoming
DSSAT 2012 Training workshop I am organizing in May. It seems that
towards the end of June I might be available to visit you. I hope that
this is not too late for the current momentum.

Please let me know if this is something you are interested in and if so,
how you would like to proceed.

Regards and Happy Easter!

Gerrit

Hi Gerrit,

This sounds fantastic news, and I'm sure this will help us in getting the cassava model developed. I'll leave it to the team to look into most appropriate dates for the visit.

Thanks Gerrit,
This is a good way of connecting the Global Futures project to DAPA's work, where Andy is putting a lot of interest on Cassava crops as they become more important in Asia and Africa.

Best regards

Bernardo

Dear Colleagues,

There seems to be progress in moving forward with the cassava modeling
activities. CCAFS through Andy, Jerry Nelson and Philip have gracefully
agreed to provide some support. Although we do not have a contract in
place yet, it looks very promising. The participation by Patricia in the
DSSAT 2012 Crop modeling training workshop held in Griffin about two
weeks ago was also good and we had the opportunity to discuss various
issues with here. Unfortunately it seems that my window to visit CIAT at
the end of June has passed, especially as we do not have an official
contract yet that allows us to move forward and for me to pay for travel
expenses to CIAT.

As soon as I have a clearer idea about the finances, I will contact you
to discuss a tentative date to visit CIAT.

Regards,

Gerrit

Dear Gerrit,
Great to see that we are building a solid team.
I am on holliday at present, but as soon as I get back we will be in contact with more details.
