The Amazing Screw-On Head is a one-shot comic book written and drawn by Mike Mignola and published by Dark Horse Comics in 2002, starring the character of the same name. The Amazing Screw-On Head stars a robot living during the Lincoln administration whose head can be attached to different bodies with different tactical abilities, and who functions as an agent of the U.S. government.
The idea for the character was inspired by action figures, particularly Batman ones, which seemed to Mignola to be the same figurines with different paint jobs. Mignola imagined a robot with a head that screwed onto different bodies to suit the occasion, hence "Screw-on Head". An animated pilot, based on the plot of the comic, was produced by the Sci-Fi Channel in 2006, with Bryan Fuller as writer and executive producer and Chris Prynoski as director.
An Eisner-award winning one-shot comic book by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola about a Victorian robot who works as a secret agent for President Abraham Lincoln, who has the ability to place his head onto different robot bodies for whatever occasion suits him.
For the first time in paperback, a collection of classic Mike Mignola comics featuring some of his strangest creations. When Emperor Zombie threatens the safety of all life on earth, President Lincoln enlists the aid of a mechanical head. With the help of associates Mr. Groin (a faithful manservant) and Mr. Dog (a dog), Screw-On Head must brave ancient tombs, a Victorian flying apparatus, and demons from a dimension inside a turnip.
This Mike Mignola masterpiece was originally published, as a one-shot, back in 2002 at Dark Horse Comics. It won the 2003 Eisner Award for Best Humor Publication, and it's one of the most laugh-inducing books I've ever read. So what the heck is this book, anyway? THE AMAZING SCREW-ON HEAD is about a mechanical head that works for President Abraham Lincoln, solving mysteries. Like most of writer/artist Mike Mignola's work, it's heavy with worldly mythology and legend. Screw-On Head takes on Emperor Zombie and a giant monster stuck inside of a vegetable. It's an insanely funny story, but that's not all you get within this collection.
Love Mignola's tidbits in Dr. Thackery Lambshead's Cabinet of Curiosities, but I'm hesitant to pick this thing up. Not because of the art or writing, but because X-Files: I Want to Believe scarred me for life with living severed heads.
The idea was for a robot whose head would screw into different bodies in order to fit the situation, which Mignola developed into an Eisner Award-winning comic book. The one-shot comic, which features an array of distinctly Mignola-ish touches, sees Screw-On Head serve as an agent under President Abraham Lincoln to thwart a villain named Emperor Zombie who is in search of a turnip (and a whole lot of other outré ideas).
Published by Dark Horse Comics in 2002, starring the character of the same name, The Amazing Screw-On Head is a quirky story about a robot whose head can be attached to different bodies, each with different tactical abilities. The Amazing Screw-On Head functions as an agent of the U.S. Government, and is tasked with keeping President Abraham Lincoln safe from Occult threats.
The Amazing Screw-On head began as Marvel Select Doctor Doom and a Marvel Legends First Appearance Iron Man figures. The Iron Man was used for the torso while the Doctor Doom parts worked for the arms and legs. Magic Sculpt was used to create all the surface details in addition to the headsculpt itself.
The pilot was released on DVD, though it is out of print and fetching pretty high prices now. And it is not currently available for purchase VOD. (The TPB edition of the comic is still available). You can find the pilot on YouTube from time to time, and I highly recommend checking it out for its sheer lunacy and a glimpse of what could have been from the amazing talent assembled.
