Random request...

I brewed a Belgian Blonde yesterday, and pitched a vial of WLP500 and a 2 L starter.  The vial was set to expire 11-15-13, so I made as large of a starter I could make.  After 20 hrs on stir plate, did not see evidence of fermentation, but pitched it in the the beer anyway.  Some strains just don't do much on a stir plate...some erupt!

Anyway, 24 hrs after pitching, I'm not seeing any activity in my carboy.  I'm worried my old yeast was just plain dead.

Do any of you have any belgian yeast in packs or washed in jars?  I don't think I can make it up to the grape until this weekend.  I'd of course get you a replacement.

Thanks guys,
Matt Shurtz

No, sorry Matt…I’ve only got a repitch of German Ale and some US Ale.  There’s always that new homebrew place in Massillon, they have some yeasts, and the place in Alliance has some also (mostly Fermentis).

Your starter maybe needed some more time on the stir plate….I’ve had a few slow starters that took a day or two..  Of course, in the next 48-hours you could begin to see some activity in your wort, just never know sometimes.

I'm no help either Matt, never got into the habit of stocking up on yeast.
Give it another day or two.....it might spring to action!

Matt

I think I have a couple Belgian slants in my deep freeze.  I'll check when I get home tonight and let you know.

All,

Thanks for the help.

When I got home last night I swirled my carboy.  Two hours later, active krausen.  Guess I just needed to be patient.

Word of caution....watch for yeast expiration dates when you buy them at the store!

What are these places in Massilon and Alliance?

In Alliance, it’s called Hydro-House….not a huge selection, but they do have various malts, extracts, hops, and some yeasts.

In Massillon, can’t recall the name….I spoke with them once on the phone and they carry White Labs (or did at some point).

The Massillon store is called Newman Creek Cellars. Be cautious of the expiration dates with them though. I was going to buy 4 vials of WLP002 and all 4 were expired, 2 of them expired in March! I just don't think he moves the beer yeast like he does the wine products.

Cheers,
Anthony
