Picked up some Star San for the 1st time.
What type of procedures/methods do you all use with this?

Any do's and don'ts are appreciated!

Add lime and some agave syrup and it makes a dandy margarita!

Or, you can just do the 1/4 oz to 1.25 gallons water or 1 oz to 5-gallons water...and I store it in a carboy or milk jugs.  The luxury of Star San is its ability to be pre-mixed and stored for awhile.  I generally soak my brewing utensils in it for at least a full minute (but often its for a time longer).

For sanitizing carboys, I'll place a gallon or so into it and swirl it around a few times and lay the carboy on its side, and then roll around while I'm brewing (same for corny kegs)...just so I know the entire internal surface area has been coated a time or two.  The for corny's, I flush the Star San our of the liquid line (maybe into a waiting carboy that needs cleaned.

My only pet-peave is that Star San foams like crazy, so the less agitation the better when mixing it.  Good luck.

I used to fill a 5 gallon bucket an soak everytin for the day til I was ready to use it,but an oz of starsan per brewday gets expensive. So now I went out and bought a gallon pump sprayer. I put about a quarter of an oz of starsan with my 1 gallon of water. Close enough for me. And I just spray everything as I use it. For carboys I spray down into the carboy and across the stop and across the lip ad let the solution slide dwn the walls then swirl it around and dump it out.. Never ever sinse afer ur using it. Evn if u have foam. Nevr fear the foam. Just pour beer/wort ontop of it. Even if you hve a foam snake. No fear. As long as u diluted it well/as instructed you should have no worries. Oh and if ur gona stgore it for long periods use distilled or R/O water. The minerals and tap waer can effect the PH over a period of storage.

Gloves are overkill. Just don't get it undiluted on your hand and even if you do, a quick rinse you'll be fine. It's not that insane of a chemical. Its just enough of a PH inbalance to kill enough bacteria to be considered sanitized, but weak enough chemically to not need rinsed.

Btw sorry fr all m typos. Quickly very quickly trying this out on my lunch break.

Sounds like a lot of people mix it and use a spray bottle as well, seems like a great idea.
Oh and don't fear the foam!
Do you use gloves when using this stuff or is that overkill?

On a related note, anybody else brewing this holiday weekend?
Haus Pale Ale w/ Sorachi Ace hops over this way.
Going to give that first wort hopping method a try.

My only problem with a spray bottle vs a pump sprayeris volume. I mean once you get down to say a 32oz spray bottle then ur talkin about 1/20th of an oz of starsan. That gets kind of hard t measure, and if you accidentally get 1/10th of an oz which isn't that large of a volume dfference and wouldn't be hard to do IMO, then you've just doubled your solution, and it's less likely to be a no-rinse solution then.

I didn't 'fear the foam' until my child was born with a hunchback and two heads.....now I have to keep "Wobbles" and "Lumpy" (yes, I named both heads) hidden in the garage when company comes over.  Now all they want to eat is foam!

I say, beware the foam...beware!

Yes, this conversation really got out of hand fast!

Cory - I echo Jon and Aaron's sentiments.  I use the same method as Aaron, concerning carboys.  When I'm done, I fill up a spray bottle to keep around.

I'm brewing a dopplebock at some point this long weekend, and kegging my yeast starter for that brew (aka, a batch of Octoberfest...tis the season)
