Newman Creek Cellars, a homebrew and wine-making shop, has opened in downtown Massillon. The business offers basic supplies for beer and wine-making, including Brewer's Best kits from LD Carlson.

Owner Bob Mann said Newman Creek Cellars also will offer beer and wine-making classes. Mann, a full-time ammonia refrigeration technician, said he's been a passionate homebrewer and winemaker for about three years.

"As much as I've done, it's like it's been 20 years," he said, laughing. "I don't claim to be a pro but I'm a dedicated enthusiast."

Mann, 55, wanted to open a shop in Massillon because there's no other nearby option for homebrewers. Ultimately, he said he and his wife would like to open a winery.

"I'm getting into it at a really good time," he said. "It was popular, real popular back in the '90s and I think it's really making a comeback, at least in Ohio with a lot of the microbreweries popping up. People are acquiring a taste for something other than the Miller Lite and Bud Light thing and that's exciting."

Downtown Massillon is just about as long a drive as Grape and Granary for me so unless they have amazing prices and selection I don't see myself venturing over there too often.  It is always nice to have more local options though and I'll stop by to check it out.  More than likely it'll turn into more of a wine making shop as most places like these do.

Not if we give them enough beer brewing business. I work in massillon, so I will be there often if I can. Try to encourage sales of beer brewing equipment.

Hell, it's typically easier for me to pay $7-10 for shipping from Northern Brewer, Midwest, or MoreBeer than to make a special trip to the Grape, or even to a good shop in Massilon.

Maybe I should move out of the boonies...
