What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Try to use casacore to read any FITS file with BITPIX=8

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I would expect the library to load FITS files with any of the allowed 5
BITPIX values. Instead it only seems to work on 4/5...

could you attach an example image and the error output please. A quick look
at the code says that it should be supported.

I have commited the changes to support this. However, be aware that only
float and double images are properly supported in casacore.
The behaviour should be in line with BITPIX=16 now.
