Does anyone here use flickr.com to share their pics?

http://flickr.com/

I'd be interested to hear any opinions, pro or con. Any other image
sharing or processing sites you'd recommend?

Thanks,
mc

I use SmugMug, and I'd definitely recommend them. Both Flickr and SmugMug seem to be great sites, and have their loyal fans. At the time I compared sites, there were a few differences that put SmugMug above Flickr for me: SM allowed for more customization of web sites, and also provided prints.

I tried the free trial SM account, and was surprised to get my site ready in a few days (incorporating it into my already existing site - www.pigeongallery.com). To see the SmugMug portion of my site, click on "prints". Not many photos there, but you get the idea. Their support was phenomenal - soon after posting a question, I'd always get a response.

Google "Flickr SmugMug" and you'll find lots of opinions out there - with specific feature comparisons. In particular, this article on SM's site is interesting (and not one-sided): http://blogs.smugmug.com/onethumb/2006/11/19/flickr-far-superior-to-smugmug/

If you *do* decide to go with SmugMug, this will give you a discount, and give me a credit: http://www.smugmug.com/?referrer=5FlxXfLvP9itQ

I realize it's not "proper" to respond to your own post, but a family
member just asked me the same question (the difference between Flickr
and SmugMug) so I thought I'd follow up. Knowing how fast they respond
to their forums, I posted the question on SmugMug's site. Chris, a co-
founder of SmugMug, provided this thoughtful response, giving Flickr
credit where due.

Hey Teresa,

Flickr's a great site and in their early years they brought a lot of
innovation to photo sharing.

There is some overlap with SmugMug but mostly Flickr is built around
social networking. They dedicate more of each page to social
networking and less to photos than we do, and their customers tend to
be people who want to get comments on their photos and find other
people and photos they like. (Helping people find the good stuff on
SmugMug is high on our list, btw, but right now Flickr does that
better.)

Our customers tend to be people who want to share photos with their
existing social network -- families, clients, friends, clubs, etc. --
and want the best experience for them. So they care about
customization (you can't customize Flickr), security (placing photos
of your 13-year-old daughter on Flickr isn't fun), and making the
photos front and center, filling most of the screen.

More Flickr subscribers are single than ours.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Chris

I've been using Flickr for a few months and have been pleased with it.
I rely very little on the social networking aspects and more for the
unlimited storage, interesting access tools, etc. The security issue
mentioned, ie photos of children, is not a problem on Flickr as you
can assign privacy levels.

However, I will definitely check out Smugmug as customization is a bit
of an issue. Thanks for the tip!

I will also reply (in poor taste) to my own post with my flickr site,
in case any one wants to see it
