Introduction to Organic Farming and High Tunnel Production Systems
April 24, 2010 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Tidewater Research Station at the Vernon James Research Center in Plymouth
This workshop provides an overview of organic farming and high tunnel
vegetable production systems. Tony Kleese will cover basic organic
standards and practices, the certification process, and market
opportunities. Steve Moore will explain the design and construction of
high tunnels as well as management and cropping systems. We will also
review the workshop series and discuss the establishment of the model
farm.
Tony and Steve have over 50 years of combined experience in organizing and
educating communities and farmers in the development of local and organic
food systems. They are both associates of the Earthwise Company, LLC,
www.earthwiselife.com
This class is the first in a series of monthly workshops that focus on
teaching people in the Albemarle Sound region of North Carolina how to
grow organic vegetables in the winter in unheated greenhouses. A model
farm of three 30x96 greenhouses is being established as a training
facility. Entrepreneurial training will also be made available with the
ultimate goal of launching multiple small scale farms and a farmer owned
distribution system that provides sustainable jobs and income, protects
the environment, and supports the community.
The cost of each workshop is $15. A discount is available for registering
for the complete series of 5 workshops. For more information or to
register, Contact LaTasha McNair at

A flyer is also attached for printing and distribution if needed.
This project is managed by the New Life Community Development Corporation
Inc. and received funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation.
