Do keep in mind as you think about education that the Cooperative
Extension Service here in Carteret is directly linked to NC State
University, and has a consumer horticulture department (me and 50+
volunteers) with one purpose, horticulture education in Carteret. Our
local foods education now and in the last few years has centered
around annual beekeeping classes, a spring lunchtime seminar series
last year on backyard foods (starting transplants, beginning vegetable
gardening, backyard bees, backyard hens), a vegetable and fruit
gardening year around class that started last fall and meets monthly
(2 sections, one day and one evening), online resources, including a
vegetable garden planting calendar for Carteret county and statewide
publications on planning gardens and on each vegetable plant (http://
carteret.ces.ncsu.edu, go to lawn and garden and then scroll down to
the links), an organic demo garden at the Leffers Cottage at the
Beaufort Historic Site, a compost demonstration behind the jail at the
Beaufort Historic Site, annual fruit tree pruning workshop (week
before last this year), a Carteret backyard foods blog at
www.soundharvest.blogspot.com, daily response to individual gardening
questions, soil testing, and regular lectures on vegetable gardening
to groups who request it. I hope you find our resources of value.

Thanks, Anne, for this useful summary. One of the goals of CLFN is to find out about, and then support and promote, programs that already exist in the county. CLFN is still in an early information-gathering stage, so please do continue to post notices of upcoming events on this listserv whenever you please. And we will include the information you gave (reformatted into a list below), with links to the extension webpage, on our site. By the way, I love your blog. The pictures are great, and your harvest log is amazing and inspiring. Many thanks for all your good work! The program has really blossomed since you came to town.
