Tom,
I also have the 5R, a 3R and the Wouxun. The 5R and Wouxun use the same cable for programming.
I got the 5R's software for programming it and the major problem was getting the computer thru the USB port to talk to the radio. I would eventually get it to work mainly by choosing the correct COM port (there is a pull down window for selecting this) and it eventually worked. However, go for a month or more and go back in and had problems...seemed if the USB ports got used for something else it changed the port.
For a USB driver go to
www.miklor.com/uv5r. Here a Ham has provided lots of info for the 5R.
Another program I used was Chirp. I loaded it and had no problem, worked the first time. I recommend you forget the 5R software and just go with Chirp. It is on line free. You have to select the 5R or Baofeng in the radio menu.
Yes programming these Chinese radios from the front panel is a bear. There are about 10 items for each memory to program (rcv, rcv tone, tx, tx tone, H/L power, if in the scan, etc). The software makes all very easy.
The 5R is nice little 5W dual band.
One problem I have with it as you see in the display there are 2 freqs. Either can be VHF or UHF, any selected from the memories. However, I find the radio only rcvs on the A or B selected, not both. So if have freq in B and A is selected it will not rcv B side. Might test this. I may have a setting set incorrect, but the radio does not appear to be a true dual band rcv. Is dual band, but only operates on one band/memory at a time. Does make easy for switching between 2 freqs.
Good luck with the HT. Again it is nice one and now going for $34 on Amazon.com. Also the accessories like batteries and spkr/mic are inexpensive.
