I recently received a BaoFeng UV-5R HT for emergency use.  After struggling with manually programming it, I am looking for someone who has managed to get the programming software working that would program it for me.

Thanks for your time,

Tom

Tom,

I also have the 5R, a 3R and the Wouxun.  The 5R and Wouxun use the same cable for programming.

I got the 5R's software for programming it and the major problem was getting the computer thru the USB port to talk to the radio.  I would eventually get it to work mainly by choosing the correct COM port (there is a pull down window for selecting this) and it eventually worked.  However, go for a month or more and go back in and had problems...seemed if the USB ports got used for something else it changed the port.

For a USB driver go to www.miklor.com/uv5r.  Here a Ham has provided lots of info for the 5R.

Another program I used was Chirp.  I loaded it and had no problem, worked the first time.  I recommend you forget the 5R software and just go with Chirp.  It is on line free.  You have to select the 5R or Baofeng in the radio menu.

Yes programming these Chinese radios from the front panel is a bear.  There are about 10 items for each memory to program (rcv, rcv tone, tx, tx tone, H/L power, if in the scan, etc).  The software makes all very easy.

The 5R is nice little 5W dual band.

One problem I have with it as you see in the display there are 2 freqs.  Either can be VHF or UHF, any selected from the memories.  However, I find the radio only rcvs on the A or B selected, not both.  So if have freq in B and A is selected it will not rcv B side.  Might test this.  I may have a setting set incorrect, but the radio does not appear to be a true dual band rcv.  Is dual band, but only operates on one band/memory at a time. Does make easy for switching between 2 freqs.

Good luck with the HT.  Again it is nice one and now going for $34 on Amazon.com.  Also the accessories like batteries and spkr/mic are inexpensive.

East Lake CERT can help you with that.  If you have the programming cable--  download CHIRP -- find the free download and try to program again.  This is the only thing that worked for us.

Otherwise, we can do it for you.

I'll echo Chirp as well - that's what I use for mine. I have got it working on the Mac & PC to update mine.

Windows was pretty much plug & play, mac took another driver to get it working.

We should get Ron Wright to start a BaoFeng net!  My 5R was really low in deviation so I took it apart and did a mod on it.  Don't even ask me to do yours, it was really hard to do.  It's great now.  I use it in our boat as a Marine Radio also.  Does wide and narrow band FM and for $35 that's crazy.  I also use win7 plus chirp to program it.  Look for me aeronautical mobile occasionally.  http://www.youtube.com/user/FlyMeAirplane

One comment on the deviation...the 5R can be set for narrow (2.5kHz) or wide band (5kh\Hz).  In Florida a few repeaters are narrow band, but most all are wide.  So when programming the radio make sure you select wide band for most like TARC and CARS repeaters.

I would suggest forget the miklor site although it is one of the best for the 5R.

Just get Chirp and things work well.  I had so much trouble with the 5R software.  The miklor site did help with USB driver although still had problems, but with Chirp worked the first and at all times.  Just had to select the correct COM port.  Had to do same with the 5R software and many times this did not work.

Concur. Plus, if it hasn't been mentioned, it can read your old radio and use that to program your new one.

Sadly, Julian Huntley, KA4HRF, became a Silent Key on October 27, 2013.  He was 85.
Those who knew him will remember his humor and his gift for making endless puns.

He was a Korean War Hero, having earned the Legion of Merit and two Bronze Stars.
He will be laid to rest at Bay Pines National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Julian's family would like to invite his friends to attend a memorial service and reception in his honor
on Friday November 8, 2013.  His daughter, Margaret, provided these details:
