Most desktop computers come with 3 or more audio connectors. Most laptops come with one combo connector that supports both headphones and a microphone. Verify that the speaker or soundbar cables are connected properly from the device to the computer. Audio connectors and plugs on the sound card are color-coded on desktops to help with a proper connection (Figure 1).

If the diagnostic tests on the audio or sound card passed, it is most definitely an issue that is related to software installed on the computer. If the above troubleshooting steps did not resolve the issue, you can try to restore the computer to factory default settings as a last resort.

Check if the memory card reader driver is installed by looking at Device Manager. If not install the latest driver available and follow the onscreen instructions from the Support Site.

I am currently having an issue getting the audio to work on this Dell Optiplex 3020 Desktop machine. We do not have a sound card installed and when you mouse over the audio icon it says No Audio Output Device is Installed. So my natural instinct was a driver issue so I went to the dell site and got the Realtek HD Audio driver that was assigned to the service tag and attempted to reinstall. I have now done that process twice and i still cannot see anything there as well as no sound device inside Device Manager. Thank you all for your time.

I sometimes have better luck using the windows native "high definition audio device" driver instead of the one suggested by dell. Doesn't sound like the exact problems I have had, but its quick and might be worth a try.

Mine is a Dell Inspiron 1525. I tried all the solutions listed here on askubuntu.com and all over the web but of no use and finally to find that it is a bug in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS/kernel-5.4 (Focal kernel) where the internal sound card is not detected. The driver soc-skl is disabled bydefault from kernel-5.4. Kernels 5.5, 5.6 all disabled this driver. Read the bug reports here and here.

I had this problem and tried everything else. For me the problem was built-in front audio in a desktop: it stopped working after a reboot. Running aplay -l said it saw no cards, but lspci -v reported an Intel Corporation C610/X99 series chipset HD Audio Controller. Its output didn't include any lines for Kernel modules. Googling told me that other people were using snd_hda_intel as the driver, but lsmod grep snd gave no results. I didn't even have a /proc/asound directory; it was just missing.

Received my new HP desktop and everything works fine. I then installed my Sound Blaster Audigy FX sound card and the drivers. Sound is very distorted and or non existent. Says drivers are the latest. Anyone have any ideas on what is going on. Sound card worked great in my old windows 10 computer. Checked on Sound Blasters website and it is compatible with windows 11.

Note that both AS500 and AS600 are EISA machines. This means youhave to run the EISA Configuration Utility (ECU) from floppy afteradding EISA cards or to change things like the configurationsettings of the onboard I/O. For AS500 which does not have aphysical EISA slot the ECU is used to configure the onboard soundinterface etc.

UP1000 SRM can boot off an Adaptec 294x adapter. Under high I/Oload conditions machine lockups have been observed using theAdaptec 294x. A Symbios 875 based card works just fine, using thesym driver. Most likely other cards based on the Symbios chips thatthe sym driver supports will work as well.

If you want to boot your Alpha over the Ethernet you willobviously need an Ethernet card that the SRM console recognizes. This generally means you need a board with an 21x4x Ethernet chipas that is what Digital used. These chips are driven by the FreeBSDde(4) (older driver) or dc(4) (newer driver). Some newSRM versions are known to recognize the Intel 8255x Ethernet chipsas driven by the FreeBSD fxp(4) driver. But beware: thefxp(4) driver is reported not towork correctly with FreeBSD (although it works excellently onFreeBSD/x86).

In general the SRM console emulates a VGA-compatibility mode onPCI VGA cards. This is, however, not guaranteed to work byCompaq/DEC for each and every card type out there. When the SRMthinks the VGA is acceptable FreeBSD will be able to use it. Theconsole driver works just like on a FreeBSD/intel machine. Pleasenote that VESA modes are not supported on Alpha, so that leaves youwith 80x25 consoles.

The biggest factor that keeps Windows installed at ALL in our house is gaming. You can talk about the large library of Steam games (which IS great, don't get me wrong), or how WINE exists etc., and that's all well and good. But the #1 biggest thing that stands in my way when it comes to converting others to Linux in general is how difficult it is to get even very basic things up and running when it comes to sound and video. There's always some problem, and nothing is quite plug and play out of the box. Either WINE doesn't quite cut it, or your sound won't work, or your GPU drivers aren't quite right, or the mouse interface on your video player isn't responding, or your headset mic isn't being sensed correctly etc. There's so many games we just need to have Windows installed to run because of this, and it grinds my gears.

Since only a small number of systems is listed here currently, you maywant to look at the Wikibooks hardware compatibility list if youcan't find your system here. While it lists a greater variety ofsystems, many of them have not been tested with AROS, so in many casesthe compatibility status given is only theoretical. Also take note ofthe adjoining pages for specific components such as graphics, networkand sound cards.
