Greetings:

I'm LaToya, Executive Director of IERN WILL Educational Consulting and Resource Advisory Service. We recently heard of a small grant opportunity through The Global Switchboard to assist in making Pittsburgh a more global city.  I have been communicating with several youth and young adult-led organizations internationally and I am working to gain financial and collaborative support for the "Empowering Women through Information and Communication Technology in Chitwan district of Nepal" initiative proposed by the Change Napalese Mission (CNM).  I began doing research and learned that a number of Napalese refugees reside in the South of the city.

My hope is to find out more about the community supports for this particular group of residents and see if there is room for collaboration with organizations currently serving them. The Change Napalese Mission (CNM) is led by a team of youth committed to overcoming the socio-cultural, economic and political barriers for all, especially young women living in Nepal of low socio-economic status and subject to poor investment in their education, nutrition, and health care.  If any of you could direct me to places or people where I can learn more about how to engage the community and invested community members around this initiative, I'd really appreciate it.

Best regards,

LaToya Williams

New Heinz Exhibit Opens Saturday
Pour on the excitement.

Experience 145 years of the H. J. Heinz Company as part of the History Center's new Heinz exhibition.

Discover how the Heinz family business began with eight-year-old Henry John Heinz selling produce from his mother's garden and grew to a worldwide company selling more than 5,700 products.

Be one of the first 57 visitors this Saturday, Sept., 6, opening day of the new Heinz exhibit, and receive free museum admission. All visitors throughout the weekend will also receive a complimentary Heinz pickle pin and will be entered into a drawing for four free tickets to the Steelers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sept. 28.

The History Center's Andy Masich accepted the #IceBucketChallenge

History Center President and CEO Andy Masich recently accepted the ALS ice bucket challenge and let's just say it was immaculate. If you haven't seen the video yet, watch it here.

To support the fight against ALS (also referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease), Andy made a personal donation to the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the ALS Association. He was challenged by Scott Lammie from UPMC Health Plan, and in return challenged Bill Lambert, CEO of MSA and chairman of the History Center's board of trustees.
Heinz pickle sizer
Artifact of the Week: Heinz pickle sizer

See hundreds of additional Heinz artifacts from the History Center's collection, the largest of its kind in the world, at the new Heinz exhibit, opening this Saturday, Sept. 6.

This salesman's pickle sizing sample case circa 1900 illustrated the variety of Heinz pickles that could be purchased by a grocer. Because Heinz regulated the size of the pickles in barrels and jars, salesmen could tell grocers exactly how many pickles were in each and accurately calculate their profits.

Don't miss the Treasures of the Arabia exhibit

Paddle back in time and discover a Pittsburgh-built steamboat that sank in the Missouri River and was unearthed nearly 150 years later in a Kansas cornfield.

In the fall of 1856, the locally-built Steamboat Arabia struck a tree snag and sank near Kansas City, Mo. Buried 45 feet under a cornfield a half mile from the river, the Arabia was discovered in 1988 by a group of modern-day treasure hunters.

If you haven't come aboard the Treasures of the Arabia exhibit yet, don't miss out. See the largest time capsule of items from pre-Civil War America, including everything from coats and boots to fine china, pre-fabricated homes, and even 160-year-old pickles, still green in the jar!
