“Our Families in The Battle of Homestead: Weaving Folklore into the Warp of Historical Fiction.”

Saturday, August 26th, 2:00 pm at the Historic Pump House
Presentation by author Trilby Busch. “Darkness Visible: A Novel of the 1892 Homestead Strike,” recreates the experiences of the workers and townspeople who witnessed the strike and battle firsthand. The author’s great-grandfather was killed in the Homestead Works in the immediate aftermath of the strike.
A Steel Valley native, Trilby Busch will show how the novel weaves oral history and research into a insider’s view of the dramatic events unfolding in 1892. Descendants of strikers and steelworkers of that era will also share their family stories.

National History Day and the Battle of Homestead ~ Local Student Shines at Heinz History Center!
Julia, a 6th grade student at Deer Lakes Middle School, placed 3rd in the Junior division with her presentation board titled “John McLuckie’s Stand in the Homestead Strike of 1892”. Julia had done meticulous research on the subject, and she visited the Pump House to learn more about the battle and to experience where it all happened, 125 years ago.
Julia will be at our August 26th event with her presentation board and she'll give us a brief talk on her work.
The Banners at the Historic Pump House
The many, large windows posed a problem for events at the Pump House during the day – we needed shades. BHF had the shades do double duty with informational images painted on them by our resident artist, Bill Yund.
There are fifteen  banners. Eleven banners depict Homestead steel workers of each decade from 1880 to 1980, taken from various photos and resources of each era. The other four show scenes of the mill; an open hearth, a Bessemer blow, an interior scene  and a typical scene of mills and a mill town by the river.
We have reproduced the banners as note cards and bookmarks to let the public enjoy the artwork and to appreciate the history narrative by decades. Fifteen note cards and bookmarks are available for purchase. On the back of each note card and bookmark is a description of the individual decade panel, telling the story of the workers in that time period.
