UPCOMING EVENTS
The Seventh Street Bridge, one of the three iconic Allegheny River "sister bridges," was constructed in 1926. It is also known as the Andy Warhol Bridge and it will close to vehicular and pedestrian traffic on August 15, 2016, for construction repairs  until November 17, 2017, when it's expected to re-open. Join us in August as we explore the city's bridges and river shores.

Film Screening: Philip Johnson
Diary of an Eccentric Architect

Tuesday, August 9
6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Join us for a screening of Philip Johnson: Diary of an Eccentric Architect, a documentary on the life and work of an iconic American architect, who once said of his own house: “My place in New Canaan is…a diary of an eccentric architect. I have kept this diary for almost fifty years.” See how Johnson came to be at the forefront of the stylistic change in architecture through the design of his own house in Connecticut, where he became his own best client.

In Pittsburgh, Johnson is best known for designing PPG Place, which was completed in 1984 at the peak of his rise as a postmodern architect. He would later say that he considered PPG Place his favorite building. Of the building's design, he said: "The tower idea came from the Cathedral of Learning, the famous Gothic tower at the University of Pittsburgh. The idea of the series of towers came from Richardson's Allegheny County Courthouse."

The film depicts Johnson at work and the importance of the architectural act, the actual construction, and how the buildings interact with their environment, in this case, the autumn leaves or snow of New Canaan.

Film Screening: First Person Singular
I.M. Pei

Tuesday, August 16
6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

I.M. Pei, a prolific Chinese-American architect, designed great buildings in the major cities of the world in a career spanning more than five decades. In this documentary, First Person Singular: I.M. Pei, the architect himself leads viewers through the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Bank of China, the Meyerson Symphony Center, the Miho Museum, and other examples of his extraordinary life’s work.

In Pittsburgh, he was commissioned by a New York developer to build three buildings that would comprise the Washington Plaza in the lower Hill. However, only one element of the three-building plaza was constructed.

In this film, Pei discusses his work in China, his years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard, and how he worked with such demanding clients as Jacqueline Kennedy, William Zeckendorf, Francois Mitterand, and Paul Mellon. He reveals his innermost philosophy and principles.

Lecture: Pittsburgh Architecture in the 20th Century
Louise Sturgess

Executive Director, PHLF
Tuesday, August 23
6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Join us for a lecture on how modern architecture came to Pittsburgh and see more than 50 notable sites in Allegheny County from 1903 to 1996: churches, schools, apartment buildings, private residences, banks, clubs, commercial buildings, theaters, a municipal building, golf club house, corporate skyscrapers, parks, and bridges and highways. You will learn and become familiar with the design vocabulary that distinguishes notable modern architecture throughout North America––and will have a peek into local 21st Century design trends, too.

This lecture is based on a guidebook published by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation in 2013––Pittsburgh Architecture in the Twentieth Century: Notable Modern Buildings and Their Architects, by Albert M. Tannler. Louise Sturgess, who served as project director and editor, took many of the 250-plus color photos in the guidebook.
