Hi,

I've received the following question from Mel Davies and I was
wondering if anybody could shed any light on this house. I've got a
vague recollection about it myself, but I can't remember any details.
Jon.

Here's the message from Mel.....

"I was born in Carlton in 1951 but don't live there any more. I used
to go to the Ramsden County Primary School (as it was called then). I
remember getting an apple, orange, threepenny bit and a sixpence from
the squire each Christmas!

I was wondering if you have any records about a house that used to be
in the field opposite the war memorial. I seem to remember that it was
sunken in the ground so that only the roof could be seen from the
road. It was probably bad for the structure and so it has now
disappeared."

Jon. The house was built sunken into the Lawns of Carlton Hall, It was
for the home of a servant of the
Hall, and was so built to stop that servant overlooking the Hall's
family and guests out on the Lawns.
At the time Mel was there, it was called the lawns field, the house
Lawn House.
I believe that Cyril Makin would at that time still be living there.
His Mother Ethel (Moore) Makin, had lived there whilst she was Cook at
the Hall, her 2 sisters
Winifred & Gladys also being maids, and brother Wilfred, before and
after school used to clean
Boots, Silver and fetch in Logs etc for the fires.
This was in the days, when the Harrison-Smiths lived at the Hall.
Sadly all known photos of the house now appear to have be lost.

Hello
Yes, I remember the house well, around 1951, 1952when we
played cricket on the Lawns field. We had to move the fence posts and
the wired fence which prevented cows from getting on the 'hallowed
turf'. ( More on this later) I remember one of the Dyke family living
there, I think a tractor driver at Barbers Farm. They had a son called
Elvyn. Anybody with me on this?
