Hello all
I know that most of us went to Ramsden School, as part of
our wonderful 'State' education. I enjoyed my time there, but was not
best served by the system. Being an August birthday, I took 11 plus
early. I passed, but when I wanted to go to Retford Grammar there was
no place for me. What did the authority do? Obvious. I stayed on at
Ramsden for another year, kicking my heels till a place came available
the next year. When I got to Retford they put me straight into the
second year. It wouldn't happen these days!!!
Those teachers were memorable, though. Buck Graver, Pop
Langfield, Mrs. Walker, Mrs Palmer, 'Fanny' Moore. I remember she used
to enjoy slapping the legs of lads wearing short trousers. She had a
big diamond shaped ring which she used to turn round, incrasing the
effect. Something else that wouldn't happen now. I expect most of you
were too well behaved to attract this kind of attention.
My mother lived at Wallingwells when she was school age, and
had to walk there and back every day. That wouldn't happen these days.
