I'm researching the Brammer (sometimes spelt Bramer) family that
originated in Carlton. My great-great-grandfather was Thomas Brammer
born in Carlton in 1817, parents John & Mary. He was a shoe maker and
moved to Sheffield where he married his second wife. He sent his infant
son, George Brammer, back to Carlton to be brought up by his sister Ann
who was married to John Bradford. The 1861 census shows them living at
The Green in North Carlton. George later became a Methodist
lay-preacher in Sheffield so I was interested in the posting by Gypsy
concerning Elizabeth Bradford and her Methodist lay-preacher husband,
and the other postings concerning Bradfords. Is there a strong
Methodist tradition in Carlton? Can anyone provide any more information
about the Carlton Brammers or John Bradford (agricultural labourer born
about 1814)? Who was Thomas Brammer's 1st wife?
Thanks,
Andie
I haven' t managed to get to the bottom of this yet, but I'm working on
it.
I have found a marriage which you probably already know about:
John Brammer married Mary Mellors on 13/10/1789 at Carlton Church. Are
they the same John and Mary who are the parents of Thomas? If so, they
waited 28 years after marrying before having Thomas, which seems rather
a long time. Perhaps they are a generation earlier?
Jon.
Thanks. I didn't know about the marriage in 1789 - so far I've worked
from family knowledge, censuses and certificates from the GRO.
Presumably you have access to parish records. Where is the local record
office covering Carlton?
I believe Thomas may have had two older siblings: Ann born in 1804 and
George in 1806. Mary Brammer/Bramer, appears in the 1841 Carlton census
aged 70 and in the 1851 census aged 82, which are consistent with the
marriage date of 1789, but means, if it is her, that she was getting on
a bit when she had Thomas - at least 46.
Any further information on the Carlton Brammers, or advice where to
look for it, would be welcome.
Regards,
Andie
I've found out a little bit more information about John Bradford and
Mary Brammer.
John was the son of John Bradford and Mary Trowne. He was born about
1815 in Carlton. He died on 24/8/1890 in Carlton. According to the
records I've found, Ann Bradford (nee Brammer) died 13/4/1874; after
which John continued to live on the Green at Carlton in Pinfold
cottage.
Does this sound correct?
Jon.
