McAvoy/McEvoy

My ancestors came from Ireland between 1848 and 1851 and settled in
Western New York, in Niagara County. Headstones in the local cemetery
indicate they came from Co Tipperary. My ancestors obit (Martin McAvoy)
says he was from Rosgray born 25 Dec 1885, however his brother's obit
(Dennis McAovy) says he was from Roscrea. (Is there a place in
Ireland known as Rosgray, or was that merely a typo at the newspaper?)

The main family I am researching is John McAvoy/McEvoy and his wife
Mary Carey, both born abt 1809. They came in two trips and brought 5
children Hanora, Martin, Dennis, Mary and John.

John's brother Richard McEvoy & his wife Mary Fermoile also immigrated
- they had two sons John and James, but have found no record of them
on passenger ship records or in US - did they remain in Tipperary?

John's sister Mary McAvoy and her husband Martin Carroll also
immigrated to this same area. Mary was born 1812 and died 1897.

There are not many McEvoy's that I can find in Co Tipperary, Jane's
Laois list has many McEvoy's in the 1901 Householder index.

I have found a few however. Most recently I purchased a "Church
Burial Record" - Martin MacKevoy, died 26 Jan 1839 of colic, age 69,
RC, parish Cournaganeen (Bourney). Address listed as Lismakin.

This record gives me hope as my Martin was the eldest son and could
have been named after his grandfather. I do not know where to go with
this information. Jane, have you visited/photographed the cemetery at
Cournaganeen? Others ideas, suggestions are welcome.

Other family names I am researching that may have come from the same
area include Sweeney, Monahan, Fermoile, Carey, Carroll.
