Place name- Cloueth, Leix

Can anyone help me identify where "Cloueth" is/was? The source of
this spelling is in the War Office (WO)section of the British National
Archives. I have found a reference there (WO97/83/86) to a Michael
Lowry or Lowrie, born Cloueth, Leix, who served in the 19th (Light)
Dragoons from 1811 - 1821. His age at discharge is given as 28 which,
although it does not quite tally with the information I got from the
churchyard at Killasmeestia, is within a few years.
I have made one attempt to view this entry on microfilm at Kew, but
found it almost impossible to decipher the negative images on the
film, so did not find the actual entry. I will try to go back there
and make it the object of my research.

    I have not been able to find Cloueth in Laois, although placenames, and their spellings, do come and go through the years. You might try the Laois County Council map site at

    There is a drop-down menu of all the townlands, and the map is easy to navigate.
