Hi - not sure how to get permission to post inviting members to
participate in a survey. I'm currently stuyding for a PG Dip in
Genealogical Studies at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow and as
part of this I am researching what motivates people to take their
interest in genealogy further - focussing on genealogy courses.
Information is available from my course director.

Is there a protocol for me to follow? I'm keen to involve members of
groups I belong to and can post a link to the survey if this is
appropriate.

Thanks,

Marie

Hi Marie,

I don't know about the group's protocols, but I'd be interested in your
project. I don't know whether what I have to offer would be useful, I've
been doing family history for about 25 years now and 8 years ago completed a
Masters Degree by thesis, not in a genealogical subject so I have some
research experience.

Let me know if I can help.

regards
Kaye Cole

Hi Marie,

You don't really need permission to ask people to participate in a survey so
long as it's of a genealogical nature and can help someone, at least not on
this list. If it wasn't to do with genealogy, then I'm the person you'd
have to ask. I began this group at a time in my life when I shouldn't have,
and it has been extremely ignored by me which is something I never meant to
do and intend correcting from now on.

I would be interested in spewaking with your course director off list as I
am working on a number of possible genealogy projects here in Ireland.

I am the admin/creator of another list which has more members than this
particualar list and where you may find a larger proportion of people
intersted in answering your questions - on which, I have probably asked all
the same questions as you will and for which I have the answers already.

That list has in theory 2000+ members and is located at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Y-IRL/

It is, one of the largest general Irish Genealogy groups on the internet

Jane - thanks for your reply. I have tried to post to the Y-IRL list,
of which I have been a member for a couple of years and also sent an
email to you to the address listed on there. Perhaps this didn't reach
you? I know the message has to be approved - so perhaps it's in a
queue somewhere!

Anyway, I'm delighted that you are interested in my survey - I'm
enclosing the details here, and this includes the contact details of my
course director - Bruce Durie.

I tend to stay in Abbeyleix when I visit Ireland on my ancestor trails
- so will certainly call at the Heritage Centre next time and maybe
say hello. I will actually be in Dublin on business on Thursday and
Friday, but not sure if I will get to Co Laois at the weekend (might
have to come home to deal with teenage/student children!)

Here is the info:
My name is Marie Dougan and I am carrying out some research on what
motivates people to undertake further study in the area of genealogy.

I can be contacted at marie....@strath.ac.uk.

The questions should not take any more than 15 minutes to complete.
Thank you very much for your co-operation
