Jean Smith
Emma Harvey b. abt 1880 (from marriage cert & census) was my
husband's grandmother who was born in Carlow according to the British
census for 1911. I know her father's name was James, his occupation
was gardener (from her marriage certificate). I can't find her on any
1901 census, either Irish or British, nor can I find her in any
passenger lists, so I only know she left Ireland before 1908 (date of
her marriage).
I think this might be her:

Birth: 02 JUN 1877 , , Ireland
Parents:
Father: James Harvey
Mother: Caroline Harvey Sunderland
I can find James & Caroline in Carlow, so it's the right area, but
the 3-year difference stops me from definitely saying it's the right one.

Its very frustrating when you find something that is almost right, but not sufficiently right to be certain, especially when two sources of which you are certain agree with each other but disagree with the possible birth date you have found.
Did you see a copy of the birth certificate of the Emma born in 1877? It should show her father's occupation. If it does not the marriage certificate of James and Caroline in 1864 (Carlow marriage vol. 3 page 429 - ref from familysearch.org) would show James's occupation. However there is of course no certainty that the James you are looking for had the same occupation in 1864 as he did when his daughter married in 1908.
Another thought, could Emma for some reason have taken a couple of years off her age?

Dear Jean,
Just another thought. Have you looked for Emma's death certificate as this would give her age at death? Of course it might just agree with the date fgiven on her marriage certificate, but maybe not.

died, there are far too many Emma Smiths to look through - and no way
of knowing if it was the right one. (my husband's father died very
young, so he knows very little about his family).
I will send off for the 1877 certificate, and see what her father's
occupation was. Or I could take a short break and go and look for
myself, I haven't been to Dublin for almost 18 years now.
