Hi folks,

Those of you subbed to Y-IRL will know that I am currently involved in
catloguing and digitising an historical collection at the moment and I
spend 3-4 days a week down the country. When I am down there, I
pretty much ignore anything that comes in.

Thing is, I had saidon this list that I was going to let the roll call
go on for a few days and then I was going to see what I could come up
with as regards suggestions for who-ever I could. *Except* when I was
out on Friday, my dog chewed up my external hard drive on which I have
back up, then on the Friday evening my lap top decided to kick the
bucket, leaving me with no email, and no back up for at least the last
two months!

So, I also have a PC which was not able to connect to the net but on
which I do have what was on that external hard drive up to two months
ago stored. I'm hoping the computer gurus will be able to rescue my
data from the lap top if they can't mend it, but I think all the email
will be gone.

This means that I am going to have to check out the replies to my roll
call on line and because of trying to set up this pc the way I had my
lap top and try to find out exactly what I may have lost, I'm going to
move real slow on any relpies to this list. It will be another few
days before I begin, probably the weekend as I am going down the
country again tomorrow

Regards,
Jane

Oh, Jane!  What a sad series of events!

Much worse than "the dog ate my homework!"

I wish you the best of luck in recovering all this.

    Jane,

Sounds like you have a bear by the tail, so please don't worry about the Roll Call until you have that taken care of. And of course no apology necessary.

Hi Jane,

Sounds like your dog was staging his own protest about being excluded
from your activities! My labrador, Shadow, enjoys coming on field
trips with me, but gets bored when I have to leave him in the car
(properly shaded and ventilated of course) while checking something
out.

I have been reading the Roll Call messages with interest, and saving
them to a separate folder. Your experience has reminded me that I
ought to do something about making sure I have adequate backup
routines, and maybe even hard copies of info which may come in useful
later.

Dear Jane,

Worry not, we can all re-send whenever you feel the moment is right.
(Luckily cats don't seem to chew things up, just defacate on them when
feeling offended!)

Regards and thanks for all your work,
