I'm looking for anyone with an interest in or information about the
following family:
John Edge Legate was born 1790, probably in Wicklow, Shillelagh area. His
parents were Sarah Edge and John Leggett - dates would be a guess. I have
considerable information on the Edges (tenants of Lord Fitzwilliam) , but
nothing on John Leggett.
John E married in Feb 1812 in Derrylossary, his second cousin once removed,
Mary Edge (b 1786). He is known to have lived at Blacklyon, Craans
Townland, in Carlow. He was a farmer and a Methodist Lay Reader. His
children are known to be:
Margaret (1814, m Enoch Price)
Sarah (1816, m John Owen)
Samuel Edge (1818, m Elizabeth Wilson)
Mary (1820, m Guy Leslie)
John (1825, m Mary Hill, in Canada)
Eliza (1827)
They are in Carlow for the Tithe Applotments and gone in Griffiths, although
a family remained in Crosspatrick, Wicklow. The Laois Legates were in Fossy
in Griffiths.
The Legates came to Canada in the early 1840's, and all their adult
children, except Sarah, emigrated as well. All of these children are
mentioned in his will, and no others. There are several other Legates who
are thought to be part of this family, but the connection is uncertain.
These are Robert Legate (1829, m Anne Legate); Benjamin Legate (1824, m
Dorothy Delaney) and William Legate (1804, m. Anne Young). My intuition
says that William is a younger brother, and both Robert and Benjamin are
nephews.
I would be very interested in suggestions for where to research this family
in Ireland. I know about the usual ones in Dublin, but with new members
joining often, they can stand repeating.
Any ideas are gratefully appreciated.
Judith
