The cost of $470 MILLION

At what cost would the BC provincial government would do without such a
large transfer payment form the federal government? A pretty high cost if
it meant going against its constituency in keeping the open door
towards the chronically dependent who can afford to travel across the
country. The 3 month residency requirement is _just_ what British Columbia
needs to stop the flood of migratory welfare recipients from enjoying the
warm weather of British Columbia and their high welfare rates. Never mind
the fact that the residency requirement did not go into effect until
December, and the federal government is witholding money in transfer
payments for the 3 _previous_ months, its the moral obligation of the BC
provincial NDP government to see this through until the end of its term.
Its nice to see that McPhail actually has the courage to stand up for her
province's rights-of course, given the fact that Young has replaced
Axworthy in human resources in the federal cabinet, the 470$ MILLION which
is rightfully due the BC government should be theirs anytime now. I would
encourage antoher step by the next BC provincial government after this
year's election, whether it be Liberal or Reform, to institute a sizeable
welfare cut, similar to the 21.6% cut in Ontario's rate implemented last
October. That, and the 3 month residency requirement will surely reduce
the 2000/month of welfare applicants that were signing up in British
Columbia before the residency requirement; and for those determined
enough, they should be able to make it back to the oasis of Canadian
social democaracy that is Saskatchewan.
