10 held for feeding Gandhi murder report to donkey in India
Sun 07 Dec 97 - 15:38 GMT
NEW DELHI, Dec 7 (AFP) - The police in southern India arrested 10
men Sunday for feeding to a donkey a copy
of an official report on the murder of former prime minister Rajiv
Gandhi, the Press Trust of India said.
It identified them as members of a regional political party of
Tamil Nadu and said they were arrested while feeding the
animal with a copy of the report in the southern state's Madurai city.
The report accused Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK party of conniving with
Sri Lankan Tamil separatist rebels, blamed for
assassinating Gandhi while the former premier was on an election
tour of the state in May 1991.
India's minority government collapsed last month after Gandhi's
Congress (I) party withdrew its parliamentary support
from the ruling coalition over the controversial report.
The Congress party, meanwhile, said the probe, conducted by a
retired judge, "conclusively proved" the DMK's role
in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, and a Sri Lankan separatist
leader who lived in Tamil Nadu.
"The report makes it clear the DMK collaborated with the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE, Sri Lanka's
separatist guerrilla group)," the party said, quoting the Gandhi
murder report, in New Delhi.
"Investigations disclose that Sivarasan (an LTTE activist who has
been named as one of the main suspects) continued
to move unhindered between Jaffna (Sri Lanka) and Tamil Nadu,
making preparations for the assassination of
Gandhi."
Judge Milap Chand Jain took 66 months to prepare the Gandhi murder
report, which runs over 5,000 pages.
