Carleton's General Open Access Server
The Engineering department has available user accounts on a system
similar to the engsoc machines for all interested in having a unix shell
account. Currently the load on the machine is very load and this will
provide greater speed to users than the chat machines.
The machine is provided on a cost recovery basis for the hardware and
maintenance time: The cost to students is $25 for six months and $50
for full year.
We provide:
-Unix Shell account
-10 Megabytes disk space for your homepages
-IRC
-Telnet IN/OUT from anywhere in the world
-LESS Load on our machines than Chat on a Powerful server
-SLIP/PPP connections for windows software
-MUCH MORE!
For any further inquires, please see the URL www.genoa.carleton.ca

What speed are your dialup connections and what is your user to modem ratio?
: What speed are your dialup connections and what is your user to modem ratio?
I'm guessing that you'd be using the same Annex as before. I might even
venture to say that the main/only reasons that this service would be of
benefit is if you would like to use/explore a UNIX shell, and if you find
that using the CHAT machine for your 'net access (like Netscape) is part
of the bottleneck that slows down your connection, and more @carleton disk
space.

We use the same modem pool as Chat at 520-1000.
A unix shell provides many advantages to the experienced user, or
someone who wants to gain experience in Unix, internet, and programming.
I also forgot to mention we support POP mail, or pine and many types
of newsreaders.
